TAIPING: The parishioners of Taiping Catholic Church were inspired by the dynamic preachers for the Feastday of the church. Fr David Lourdes, the former Parish Priest, concelebrated throughout the Triduum. The themes for the Triduum were focused on the parish thrust CARE — We are Family, a gift of God where we Cherish, Affirm, Respect & Empower one another.

On the first day, Fr Albet Arockiasamy from the KL Archdiocese, preached on Cherish where “we are called to cherish our family as our heavenly Father cherishes us. In times of crisis, God, the good steward will look after us as He has not given up hope on us despite all the evil in the world. We, too, as a family will emulate what God has done for us.”

Though the Mass was in Tamil, Fr Albet preached in both Tamil and English. On the second day, Fr Martin Then CDD, the Parish Priest of Balik Pulau Church Penang, touched on the theme Affirm. He preached in both Mandarin and English. On the third day, Fr Simon Labrooy, from St Thomas More Church, Subang Jaya celebrated in Bahasa Malaysia. He started his preaching with these words Kasih Tuhan (Love God), Kasih Diri (Love self) and Kasih orang ramai (Love others).

Then he continued, “Our basic need is to be loved and to love. Lives would be empty if love is not experienced. Out of love is the fruit, respect, and from respect is the call to a righteous living.” He ended by reminding the people to respect self and to respect one another as Respect is the fruit of Love. For the Vigil Mass, Bishop Antony Selvanayagam was the main celebrant with Fr Gerard Theraviam, Fr Jude Miranda and Fr David Lourdes concelebrating. With them was Brother Joachim Robert, who is doing his pastoral work in Taiping.

Bishop Selvanayagam urged the people to respond to the call of our Holy Father to build up our family. From the three Readings, he said there was this longing to be nurtured and empowered by the Spirit. So we are to allow the Holy Spirit to act within us. On Pentecost Sunday, Fr Gerard Theraviam presided over the Mass with Fr Jude Miranda and Fr David Lourdes concelebrating. Brothers Joachim Robert and Aloysius Tan joined in the celebration.

Fr Gerard summed up the four themes before he stressed that the transformation that took place at the Upper Room must move out to the “market place”. “As Christians, we are called to proclaim Jesus outside and not remain in our comfort zone. Being church is not about praying in church but as families we are called to be missionary. As a family, we are called to bring Jesus to our neighbours; as a family we are to show Jesus to the people and to tell the world this is how we live.” The Feastday ended with a fellowship lunch. —By Valerie Angus
