Dhaka: The first Missionaries of Charity (MC) superior general to visit Bangladesh since Blessed Teresa of Kolkata in 1995 has praised the “enormous efforts” her nuns have made to put smiles on poor people’s faces.

“It amazes me to see so many happy faces where our nuns are working. It is a matter of great joy that our nuns are so determined to help these poor, vulnerable and needy people,” said Sister Prema.

The German nun who heads the Missionaries of Charity congregation that Blessed Teresa of Kolkata established and ran said during her June 20-July 31 visit to Bangladesh.

“This is a routine visit to our houses around the country. I’m visiting 13 centers in different diocesan territories, 12 of them are run by nuns and one center is run by our brothers,” Sister Prema said.

“I’m happy and satisfied with our nuns and brothers for their dedicated service to the poor and helpless. They render all kinds of pastoral services in accordance with the aims and objectives of our congregation.”

Sister Prema, however lamented the lack of young volunteers in the Church serving the poor in Bangladesh.

“I’ve not seen any youth volunteers assisting nuns and brothers. This needs to be encouraged here since it will help more people.”

The visit of the superior general boosts morale for the local nuns, said Sister Olivet, the country superior.

“We’re encouraged by her presence among us and her direction will lead us towards better services for poor and needy people,” she said.

The congregation first arrived in Bangladesh in 1972 to provide humanitarian aid for victims of the country’s independence struggle.

There are 85 local and foreign MC nuns and four brothers currently working in Bangladesh.
