TAIPING: Evangelisation has to do with our life and our faith. The call to evangelise begins the day we are baptized, said Fr Jude Miranda when he introduced “Discipleship Towards New Evangelisation” as the Pastoral Theme for 2012 at the Parish Assembly of Taiping Catholic Church.

We are all called to be disciples. This means that we are to know Jesus and grow in fellowship with him so that we are empowered by him to carry out the Mission ahead.

When Jesus calls us to “come and see” he also says “go and tell”, said Fr. Jude. The “go and tell” dimension is very often forgotten. It is action orientated. We cannot, he said, call ourselves disciples until we recognize and realize these two dimensions in our hearts, our families, our BECs and in our Church.

To reinforce these two dimensions of the call of a disciple, Fr Jude, using power point, focused on the word SHIP - S the call to be a sign (2 Cor. 1:21-22), H - the call to Holiness (1Pet 1:16), I - the call to be Involved and be inside the ship and P - the call to Proclaim the mighty acts of God (1Pet.2:9).

He elaborated on the acronym SHIP by saying that we are called to be a SIGN of Love, Hope and Peace and that we need to reflect on these when we are called to be a Sign.

He went on to say that we need to be HOLY because it’s a direct call of God, who made us and has invited us. God is Holy and since we share in God’s life, we have something of God and we cannot run away from the very nature of God but to be Holy people if we call ourselves disciples. Others will recognise our identity as Christians and see God through our Holiness.

To be INVOLVED is part of Christian living as we are not islands; we need to share with one another, for the building of the kingdom of God is not meant for some but for all Christians.

Finally, he said the call to PROCLAIM is the call for all baptised Christians and not just a few. To deepen this insight, Fr Jude Miranda invited Mr. Joseph Gomez to share his conviction on Evangelisation and to tell us his story of Jesus. Mr. Joseph Gomez lost his sight in a road accident, but this was not an obstacle to prevent him from coming all the way from Seremban, just to share his testimony for fifteen minutes and to witness to what it means to be a disciple.
