Talk on Anger Management in Penang

PENANG: Fr Edmund Woon gave a talk on Anger Management on June 12 at the Church of the Holy Name of Mary.

He categorized anger under three headings:

Masked Anger — is sneaky and is turned inwards on oneself.

Explosive Anger — a sudden burst of anger based on shame. It is deliberate and excitatory.

Chronic Anger — which is habitual hostility, paranoid anger, which is the result of resentment and self hate.

It is a fact that all of us do get angry. We should try to handle the anger by:

i) Treating it as normal part of life.
ii) Using anger as a signal that there are problems which need to be addressed.
iii) Anger actions are to be screened carefully, so that necessary actions can be taken.
iv) Anger is to be expressed in moderation, without losing control.
v) The goal of anger is to resolve problems, not just to express feelings.
vi) Anger is to be stated clearly, in ways that others can understand and respond appropriately to their wants and needs.
vii) To let go of anger, rather than hang on to it once the problem is solved.

Fr Woon encouraged all to accept the blessing of anger, for St Paul says, “Be angry, but don't sin.” (Ephesian 2:4)

The talk was organised by the Ladies Committee and 57 persons were present.
