Dear Editor,
I write to pay tribute to the late Mr. Karpal Singh and his aide Mr. Michael Cornelius who I think in many ways had been exemplary in what it means to truly follow Jesus.

In many ways, I think Karpal had in principle followed the way of Jesus though not being a Christian. In his time Jesus challenged the authorities who had discarded the truth, in pursuit of selfish interest, and he was hated for it. Karpal in our time had challenged the ruling power which often was manipulative in adjusting the letters of the law and the Constitution to retain their positions and self-serving interests.Jesus put God above all else. Karpal upheld the principle of law above all. Jesus was threatened and harassed but he held firm to his calling and was persistent in his mission. Karpal encountered the same, and on one occasion he insisted on walking out from the front door of the court despite being threatened with an attack due to a case he brought against a royalty. Jesus demonstrated the compassion of God towards the poor and lowly beyond the boundary of tribes and creeds. Karpal went beyond religions to even defend in court the Muslim students in Singapore who were ordered to remove their tudung. Though Jesus was the Son of God, he was meek and humble. Many of the testimonies that came after Karpal’s demise had shown him to be a person of similar qualities. Pardon my shallow knowledge of theology, but if God had created mankind in His love without the restriction of religions and that Jesus is the way, the truth and the life, then Karpal in his pursuit of the spirit of law, justice and peace and Michael in his humble and dedicated service would have led them to be with Jesus in paradise today. May they continue to inspire more peoples to be Christ-like.
