KUALA LUMPUR: At the 7th Annual Sports Day for Stella Maris International School, students took part in a variety of events, held at the University of Malaya sports arena. The 7th Sports Day proved to be no ordinary sports event. Staff, parents and students were surprised by a royal visitor — none other than His Majesty, the Yang Di Pertuan Agong, Al-Sultan Abdullah Ri’ayatuddin Al-Mustafa Billah Shah.

His Majesty broke protocol by coming down onto the tracks to cheer the athletes and shook hands and sportingly allowed snapshots with families who came crowding around. The royal visitor joked and laughed with parents, students and teachers and asked after their welfare. “He is a King of the people” quipped the mother of a Primary Year 2 child. “I could feel the warmth of his personality and I could not help holding back my tears”, remarked another mother whose two sons are in the school.

Accompanying the King in the walkabout was the Chairman of the Council of the Yayasan Tan Sri Dominic Vendargon, as well as the Chairman of the Board of Governors, Brig Gen (Rtd) Dato’ Richard Robless, the President of the School, Dr B.C. Tan, and the School’s Sports and Extra Curricular Activities coordinator Arunandy Subramaniam. It was also a nostalgic moment for His Majesty when he met Arunandy, who was his school teacher back in the 1970s at St Thomas School in Kuantan. Dato’ Robless thanked the King for the visit which was a great honour to the School. The royal visit was over just as quickly as it had begun. But it left many transfixed and spellbound as they rejoiced and were glad.

Malaysian Olympic diver and winner of gold medals in SEA, ASEAN and ASIAN games, Nur Dhabitah Sabri was the invited guest of honour, made a guest appearance. She was inspiring in her short address to the students, stressing the value of sports and advising the students to follow their dreams. “You can do it for your motto is Semper Excelsius,” she said to a resounding applause. -- Stella Maris International School Damanara
