Saqi, Absalam and Omid are three men who have come from Pakistan, Eritrea and Iran seeking a more hospitable land. Like most migrants, they did not leave home willingly. When they left their countries, they were fleeing a crushing, hopeless existence, in some cases made up of humiliation and persecution.

The Mediterranean Sea has become “the most deadly route in the world,” according to the UN High Commissioner for Refugees. But fear of death does not dissuade those who flee.

What should Europe do to cope with this irrepressible movement? Pope Francis ceaselessly advocates helping and accommodating clandestine immigrants. It is regrettable to see Italy assuming almost singlehandedly the majority of the rescue missions. Europe has not measured up to the humanitarian challenge it faces today.
