PAPAR: Twenty aspirants from Catholic Archdiocesan Centre (CAC) Penampang made a visit to Holy Family Residence for Senior Citizens in Purak here on 1 Apr 2017 as part of their annual programme.  With them was their spiritual director, Father Wilfred Atin.

The aspirants did some chores around the residence. Some cleaned the chapel, the pond and the building. Others prepared lunch in the kitchen and some chatted with the residents.  It was an eye-opening experience as they were amazed by the patience and skills demonstrated by the staff in handling the challenging behaviours of some of the residents.

The 32-year-old home currently has 37 residents. The aspirants took the opportunity to speak to some of them,  one of whom is Mrs Tina Rimmer. She is 100 years old and has spent 67 years living in Sabah, she has decided not to go back to her home country, England as she strongly feels she belongs to Sabah. She first came to Sabah as the first woman education officer in 1949 and worked to improve education for children. She worked as an artist years ago and had produced many works like The Tamparuli Tamu (A Sabah Market) in 1999 and Portrait Drawings of Palliative Care Patients.

According to Franciscan Sisters Clara Orou and Aileen Andau, who are serving there, it is costly to maintain the residence’s operation and they have to rely on people’s generosity in cash and kind. Anyone interested in donating or volunteering, please contact the residence at 088-911334. -- kkdiocese.net
