SANDAKAN: On Aug 20, an awareness campaign on safe migration was jointly organised by the Human Development Commission and the Diocesan Youth Apostolic Commission at the Cathedral of St Mary, Sandakan.

About 30 youth, including parents, attended this talk. Also present and supporting this campaign were Sr Lilian Unsoh, FSIC and Fr Stanley William. The purpose of this campaign was to provide awareness to youth who may wish to travel or migrate to other cities/countries.

Migration often happens, either from the rural villages to the urban towns, or from one country to another. However, do we, as youth, know how to migrate and whether the process of migration is safe and correct?

The “Safe Migration” session was delivered by Hezrina Ibrahim (pic right) from the International Organisation of Migration. She stressed the importance of having valid travel documents when looking for jobs overseas. In addition, Hezrina also reminded all those present to obtain proper travel documents (passports) and legitimate work permits through authorised licensed employment agencies. They should avoid short-cuts by going through the internet or middlemen. Anyone who wishes to work outside the country should also know their rights if they have valid legal documentation. If the documents are done through unauthorized agencies, middlemen or the internet, there is every possibility of the worker being exploited, by receiving a small salary or face other difficulties in the working environment.

In addition, he/she can be caught in drug or human trafficking which can result in death. Therefore, every precaution should be taken to ensure that work permits are obtained through legitimate channels.

The session continued with a short video on “Safe Migration” to show the youth how to travel/migrate safely, following the correct procedures. It is hoped that the talk and video presentation will make the youth more aware of the importance of how to migrate safely and to share what they had seen and learnt with their families and friends. -- Newsupdatedospo
