Once again, BEC Area Group 4 (BEC AG4) of Tanjung Bungah, under the auspices of the Church of the Immaculate Conception in Pulau Tikus, has gone beyond its boundaries to reach out to the community at large.

For the second year running, the group ventured out at dusk to the streets of the city of George Town, walking the alleyways and byways to feed the homeless in certain parts of George Town where the homeless are known to spend the night.

More than 20 members of the BEC AG4 and friends from neighbouring BECs gathered at the Tanjung Bungah market to sort out the items such as fried beehoon with a hard boiled egg, 1 packet of biscuits and 1 cup of drinking water into 50 goodie bags to be distributed to the needy.

The group broke into four teams, each covering a designated area and regrouped at the starting point
after an hour.

AG4 coordinator Paul Fletcher was proud of his group members who had sacrificed their time and energy to participate in this worthy cause.

“The BEC Core Team came together to plan for this event and the teamwork from members and friends made this event successful.

“The members were very cooperative and it was wonderful to see everyone working together, sharing out the work and the preparation of food packages for the needy.

“Our chef, Roselin Dass, did a great job to cook and prepare the food which we distributed in Armenian
Street, Acheen Street, Ah Quee Street, Stewart Lane, Lorong Chulia and Jalan Masjid Kapitan Keling.

“I am glad and blessed to have such wonderful friends coming together to work as a team,” said Fletcher.

Fletcher added that the BEC members were very happy to have joined in this event as some felt so blessed. Some were saddened by the condition of the needy especially the homeless sleeping on the pavements.

“It warmed our hearts to see the recipients very happy to receive the food packages, and they thanked us for our generosity,” added Fletcher.

BEC AG4 has been very active for more than 40 years and the number of members has beengrowing steadily over the years with many members from neighbouring BECs joining in.

The BEC AG4 has a year round host of activities, including the outreach programmes to old folk homes and orphanages during the festive seasons, gatherings at the local community hall during each major festival and religious events, homebound visits to homes of members, Christmas carolling in the area and outside the zone.

In early April, the BEC AG4 will be going to the Rumah Persatuan Kebajikan Jayam Sri Laxmi Home CARE in Nibong Tebal, run by a volunteer lady, to hand over muchneeded provisions in aid of the home.
