1.0 Female Altar Servers

1.1 Having consulted the College of Consultors and having heard from the members of the College of Priests and other members of the Presbyterium, and considering the current practice in the two suffragan dioceses of Penang and Malacca-Johore, His Grace, Most Reverend Archbishop Julian Leow D.D. has made a prudential judgment to permit the admission of female altar servers to the service at the altar (servitium ad altare).

1.2  Such permission is in line with an authentic interpretation of Canon 230§2 of the Code of Canon Law, which states, “lay persons by temporary deputation may fulfil the function of lector during liturgical services; likewise all lay persons may carry out the functions of commentator and cantor or other functions in accordance with the norm of law.” In 1994, the Congregation for Divine Worship and Sacraments, following a 1992 letter from the Pontifical Council for the Interpretation of Legislative Texts, clarified that the lay persons, both men and women, can be included in the meaning of Canon 230§2, which also includes the ministry of service at the altar (altar servers).

1.3 This permission to admit female altar servers in the Archdiocese of Kuala Lumpur will take effect on the First Sunday of Advent, December 1, 2019. Parish priests are to exercise prudence, taking into consideration “among things the sensibilities of the faithful”, when implementing this in their respective parishes.

1.4 If a parish priest wishes to introduce female altar servers in his parish, the following must be adhered to:

a. The Parish Pastoral Council and liturgical committee are to be consulted;

b. Prior and adequate explanation must be given to the congregation on the scope and the parameters of the above permission and the reasons for implementation;

c. Female altar servers are not to be admitted without prior adequate training and implementation of safety and liturgical protocols. Guidelines will be issued by the office of the Archdiocese Liturgy Commission in this regard.
