IPOH: The story of how Mary, a young virgin, was chosen to be the mother of the Son of God, was told in a Christmas story just before Mass on Christmas Eve at St Michael’s Church (SMC) this year.

The spirit of joy and peace in the congregation was evident as St Peter’s choir shared the story of the Annunciation — when Mary was overshadowed by the power of the Holy Spirit, and her immediate “yes” response in which she rejoiced in God for choosing her despite her lowliness.

In so doing, God’s plan of salvation was brought about through Mary, who would give birth to Jesus in a simple, humble stable. The events leading up to Jesus’ birth were also highlighted during the wonderful singing and video presentation.

The Christmas eve Mass was celebrated by Fr Stephen Andrew and concelebrated with SMC parish priest Fr Anthony Liew.

After the entrance procession and veneration of the Altar both priests  waited for a couple who brought up “baby Jesus” to the altar, and presented him to Fr Stephen, who then held the baby aloft before placing him in the crib at the manger.

Fr Stephen then incensed the manger and the altar, before the first part of the Mass started. Fr Stephen, in his opening words reminded the people that Christmas is a time of giving and living as Jesus did. “Let us imitate Jesus, and share the same joy we experience with others,” he said.

In his homily, Fr Liew said Christmas is the time when we can feel hope as Jesus was born and He is the saviour of the world. After the original sin by Adam and Eve, God wanted to bring us back to paradise. God had thought of  mankind’s salvation and created Mary, so God could save mankind from the consequences of Adam and Eve’s disobedience, he said.

“That is why in Gen 3:15, it is stated that the woman will crush the head of the serpent. That woman is  Mary,” he said.

It is the same Holy Spirit who gave her the power and the gift that Mary received at the annunciation. She is the new “Eve” who paved the way for salvation to take place in the world and bring back the life, dignity and grace lost by sin, he added.

“That is why the angel told the shepherds not to be afraid, because he was bringing news of joy, that a saviour has been born.

“At times we feel life is unbearable, and so challenging, that we are over-stressed. These are some of the sharings I have heard. They are crying out for hope and help.

“We hear of many suicides and depression cases in the news. If these people had known of Jesus Christ, they would be able to surrender their troubles to Jesus with hope,” he said.

“Jesus who cures the sick will liberate us, lighten our burdens and give us the strength to move on. Our Catholic liturgy is very rich. The four Advent candles symbolise hope, peace, joy and love.

“Many of us are seeking hope and peace. Peace is an experience from within and it comes from surrendering to God. To God, everything is possible. When we lose hope, think of Jesus,” he said.

After the homily, the people stood up to recite the Creed.

At the part of the Creed which states,“ and by the Holy Spirit was incarnate of the Virgin Mary and became Man,” everyone knelt down and adored Jesus, before continuing.

During offertory, Fr Liew asked the people to offer up their challenges in life to Jesus.

After Holy Communion, Fr Liew thanked all those who helped in preparing for Christmas, and Advent, including decorating the church, the carollers, choirs and the liturgy team.

On behalf of SMC, including himself, Fr Robin Andrews and the staff, Fr Anthony wished the people a blessed Christmas.

After Mass, everyone gathered outside to wish both priests a Happy and Holy Christmas.
