Joyful smiles, cheers of applause and diversity of cultures were displayed at City Parish’s World Day for Migrants and Refugees celebration September 29.

More than 200 parishioners representing the Philippines, Vietnam, Indonesia, Myanmar and Pakistan were present at the Church of Our Lady of Sorrows for this special occasion. Many wore their traditional costumes.
Parish priest Msgr Aloysius Tan celebrated the Mass. The readings, hymns and offertory items were contributed by the different migrant communities.

Msgr Tan expressed the parish’s honour to be able to host a large group of migrants and them into the community of faith as part of the beautiful diversity of City Parish.

He linked this diversity in his homily with a popular local dish – rojak. He said all communities can enrich each other despite their differences in language or culture.

“Although we may sometimes find it difficult to communicate, the language of love can be understood by all, and it is expressed through our presence, action and kindness.”

Msgr Tan said that the beauty of the Church lies within its universal nature, and that the sacraments unite all followers of Christ together.

Reflecting on the Church’s theme It Is Not Just About Migrants, he urged all parishioners to be inclusive and welcoming towards those who come for Mass every weekend.

“Our faith challenges and invites us to go out not only to share our love for God, but to also share this same love with all mankind,” he said.

Msgr Tan ended his homily by thanking the migrant community for their contributions and efforts for the parish and hoped that they would grow and bond together with faith and love.

Parishioners were feted to a sumptuous luncheon after Mass. In the spirit of friendship, many greeted each other.

The crowd was then entertained to many interesting performances of dance and songs, before participating in the lucky draw segment.
