They came with hearts filled with prayer and hope and went back feeling joyful and blessed after receiving the mercy of God.

This experience was shared by 80 members from City Parish, Penang who went on a pilgrimage to St Anne’s Church on July 16. They were accompanied by parish priests Fr Nelson Chitty and Fr Joachim Robert.

The church is one of the three pilgrim churches for the Year of Mercy in the Diocese of Penang, with a designated Holy Door which was opened by Bishop Sebastian Francis.

Fr Nelson said that the parish organized this pilgrimage in response to Pope Francis’ call for the Jubilee Year of Mercy.

“It is good to see many of them coming together, as one parish, and to fulfill the spiritual exercise before entering the Holy Door,” he said.

The parishioners were split into two groups, as they went up the hill and around the church grounds following the Stations of the Cross.

"After completing the stations, they recited prayers at the Shrine before entering the Holy Door of Mercy. The parishioners also prayed to St. Anne seeking for her intercession.

A special Mass was celebrated at the Blessed Sacrament Chapel by Fr Joachim concelebrated with Fr Nelson.

In his homily, Fr Nelson gave a brief summary on the Year of Mercy. He also urged all to put this Jubilee Year into good use.

“In this special year, God is being extraordinarily merciful towards all our sins,” he said while urging all to practise mercy towards one another.
