“Hope you know what you are. God wants to come close to us. We have a God who is not from a distance. But right in our midst. Incarnation, God becoming flesh, becoming one of us, all except sin. God who wants to be with us forever”.

Archbishop Julian Leow said this to 18 candidates for Confirmation at the Church of St Anthony, on Sunday, August 19.

Earlier the prelate welcomed and invited the assembly to pray for the 18 candidates, that the Holy Spirit strengthen their faith and ours.

The 9.30am Mass was presided by Archbishop Leow with parish priest, Fr James Gabriel concelebrating.

The prelate addressed the Confirmation candidates and said God became human to show us His love.

The way He came to us as Bread and Wine in the transubstantiation, becoming His Body and Blood in the Eucharist. “Only with faith can we understand this.”

“God has said that even if we might not understand, the Holy Spirit will enlighten us to the complete truth. Jesus Christ is the fullness of the revelation and there is no new revelation.

The Holy Spirit helps us to understand what this means to give us His Body and Blood,” the prelate asserted.

Archbishop Leow then asked, “What does it mean to be a disciple of hope? We are called to bring God’s hope and love to a broken world. We are to bring life, to bring hope, to bring Jesus into our family, in our work places, in the society.

“Do people see the presence of God through us in our life style? Do I reflect God on what I say or think? If not, we are called today to repent, to turn away from sin and change for a holy life,” Archbishop Leow reiterated.

Touching on the day’s Reading about wisdom and intelligence, the confirmands were reminded to sing praises to God and to spend time in useful conversations, giving praise and thanks to the Lord. “Not like those who do not reflect but pray Jesus will say ‘Hi, My servant, come into your place in heaven’; or do we rather hear Him say ‘I do not know you because you did not follow My commandments or accept My invitation. Jesus will respect our decision. That is why we must always choose and follow Jesus Christ. Discover God’s will and choose God.”

In ending his homily, the prelate invited them to pray for wisdom and the will of God, and ask the Holy Spirit to journey with us in our journey of faith.

At the end of the Mass, Fr James thanked the prelate for administering the Sacrament of Confirmation to the eighteen youths. He also told the Confirmands to continue to serve in the parish, with the grace they had received. Fr James also expressed his gratitude to the catechists for the faith formation, parents for their support and sponsors for their guidance to the Confirmands.
