FRASERS HILL (Herald Malaysia): “EQ and not IQ is more indicative of success and happiness in human relationships,” shared Joe and Anita, who presented their thoughts at the recent KL Archdiocesan Family Life Convention held from May 2 – 5.

Forty-seven participants from 11 Parish Family Life Ministries came to deepen the bonding among old and new participants with new resolve to network, collaborate and reach out to families in parishes.

Rebond and Renew, was the theme as a follow-up on the last Convention three years ago, The topics chosen were more issue-orientated but still in line with our Mission statement of building up Christ-centred families and also in line with Pope Francis’ emphasis on family, which is also the theme for the Synod of Bishops meeting in October 2014.

Alvin Teoh, from the advertising world and a parishioner of Good Shepherd, spoke on how to make use of our New Mission Field – the Digital Media, which is to reach out, to touch, to evangelise. Peppered with powerful video clips, he shared how sometimes, he, and many others have merged work with social outreach through this digital media. We were truly enlightened and challenged to do our part in the digital world.

Then Andrew & Andrene, followed by Dr Francis Heng, a psychiatrist, touched on the subject of the Elderly, the Faith aspect and the Spiritual-psycho-social aspect, respectively. They supported their talk by appropriate power point presentations and many Biblical quotations and the consoling quotations from St JP II and Pope Francis. While Andrew & Andrene shared how Faith illuminates the mystery of death and brings serenity to old age - St JP II, Dr Heng touched on Erikson’s last stage of life as the “age of Integrity, of Wisdom,” the five stages of grief, coping mechanisms and what we can do, as Church, to embrace the elderly. We came away with the hope that the Holy Spirit will endow us with enough wisdom and character to mean something to the next generation even though we are frail and aged.

Joe and Anita from Assumption Church took up the challenge of Enhancing Our Couple Relationship through emotional intelligence, defined by five core traits of Self-awareness, Self-regulation, Motivation, Empathy and Social Skills. (Daniel Golman, Ph D Emotional Intelligence) which are essential to a lasting, connected and fulfilling relationship of love and intimacy. This session ended with a very touching and meaningful reflection into ourselves and writing a letter to someone who has touched and inspired us.

The last session was an Overview of the Theology of the Body (TOB in short) by St JP II, who offered the Church a fresh look at our sexuality and what it means to be human. Grounded on biblical revelation, this vast reflection on the human person encompasses topics like Creation, Redemption, Eternal Life, Marriage and Celibacy and Christian Morality. Introduction to TOB, a Weekend Seminar, can be conducted in parishes upon request

The Convention ended with a Workshop Moving Forward, a discussion on what direction we should move in our Archdiocese, how to give flesh to our Vision/ Mission of building up families to be Christ-centred, rooted in the Word of God and Church Traditions. The Statement is in the process of being finalized but it will definitely be in line with our discussions and a reflection of the times.
