MALIM, Melaka: The feast of Santa Cruz (holy cross) was celebrated at the Santa Cruz Chapel, from Sept 13 to 16, 2018.

The four-day feast drew several thousand who came from far and near. The Chapel is located on a small hilltop. It was initially built in 1850 and its construction was said to be related to the finding of a cross here. The wooden Chapel was rebuilt and enlarged with concrete walls between 1977 and 1989. The chapel now has a new coat of paint and some minor improvements, including preparation of a small room for the Blessed Sacrament during the feast, by Parish Administrator Fr Lionel Thomas.

At the Sept 15 evening Mass, Fr Lionel quoted Jesus’ words to His disciples, “Who do you say that I am?” (Mark 8:29).

Some say a good Prophet, others Elijah, a good man. Or we can move forward, like Peter wo acknowledged, “You are the Son of the living God”.

Fr Lionel, who is also the Parish Priest of the Church of St Peter, said, “Do you honestly mean what you say? James (James 2:14-18) challenged us by expressing that you either have living faith or dead faith. “The faith must move from our head to heart to our hands.”

Fr Lionel reiterated the need to take our Faith, Catechism, Mass, Holy Communion and Bible reading seriously. He also mentioned that faith without love is dead faith.

“Move from a faith that is dead, or dying to a living faith and you can say, like Peter: ‘You are the Son of the Living God’.”

Many also came early, with some praying the Stations of the Cross. The annual feast of Santa Cruz is gaining popularity with the local Catholics and Singaporean Catholics as the power of the Cross of Christ is evident, as Christ conquered death on the Cross by rising up on the Third Day.

The Cross of Christ, the symbol of Christianity, is also the sign of God’s victory over evil and is a sign of hope for the broken world. As in the Cross, there is power to overcome evil in Christ’s Resurrection, and as hope for the future, there is eternal life only through Jesus Christ Our Lord and Saviour. — By Bernard Anthony
