The Special Needs Learning Centre (SNLC), part of the work of the Archdiocesan Office For Human Development (AOHD), celebrated their first ever graduates, Rubenraj Senthirajah, Adrian Michael Arulappu, Soosairaj Francis Jacob, Kumarendran@ Kannan and Jonathan Lee Thien Shui on April 6.

The students received their certificates from Cardinal Anthony Soter Fernandez.

As April is the Awareness month for Autism, the students and parents participated in the liturgy at the Mass celebrated by Fr Bernard Hyacinth, concelebrated with Cardinal Soter Fernandez, Emeritus Archbishop Murphy Pakiam and Fr Gregory Chan.

The Autism Awareness month was launched by lighting up a puzzle display in a simple graduation ceremony after Mass at Assumption Church, Petaling Jaya.

This was followed by lunch at Volle Hall. It was truly an emotional moment seeing the first batch of students dressed in their full suits and receiving their certificates. Archbishop Julian Leow attended the graduation ceremony too.

The Special Needs Learning Centre (SNLC) was first started in 2001 by a group of parents who wanted to help their children diagnosed with Autism. As these boys grew, the need to equip them with life skills was crucial in order to help them manage their lives better and this was when the Vocational Training Centre (VTC) opened in 2012.

The boys were taught using two widely accepted programmes — Life Centred Career Education (LCCE) and Treatment and Education of Autistic and Communication Handicapped Children (TEACCH).

Based on these curricular, the boys were taught in six areas of life such as Vocation Skills, Vocational Behaviour, Interpersonal Behaviour, Independence Functioning, Leisure & Recreational Skills and Functional Communication. We are very proud of these students and of their achievements. The next intake will be in August 2019.
