SANDAKAN: In response to the Year of Mercy, St Mary's Cathedral Parish Human Development Ministry has embarked on a fund raising project, ‘Flowers With Purpose’ during the season of Advent. The proceeds from the sale was used solely to carry out corporal works of mercy, hoping to bring forth Christmas joy to families living in the periphery.

The team set up stores in front of St Mary’s Cathedral, St Joseph’s Church and St Mark’s Church on the 3rd and 4th Sunday of Advent. The potted plant was sold at RM25 each. Parishioners responded positively to assist in making the project a meaningful Advent season event. By taking a pot home they had indeed contributed to the needy in sharing the Christmas joy with them.

Many had contributed to the success of the project; the suppliers, the promotion and marketing team and above all, the caring parishioners who had purchased the flowers and those who had contributed to the project.

Below is the breakdown of the fund generated through the project;

Sales of flowers

RM2,995.00

Contributions from parishioners

RM1,401.25

Contributions from the Diocesan Staff

(a ringgit a day for the Advent season)

RM 375.25

Contributions from Catechumens (RCIA)

RM 202.50

Total

RM4,974.00

The proceed has been distributed to 27 needy families in the form of sundry goods, the Community Learning Centre (CLC) for children of migrant workers and to the family of Father Jasery, the rector of St Martin's Church Telupid, whose family’s house in Kiulu was completely burnt down.

In this, the Extraordinary Jubilee Year of Mercy, let us continue to move forth to rediscover the corporal and spiritual works of mercy, for it is in each of these ‘little ones,’ Christ himself is present. Let the fragrance of love flow from your heart to reach out to the less fortunate. Let us in our little way brighten up their lives.--newsupdatedospo.blogspot.in
