Thirty-nine young people received the Sacrament of Confirmation at the Church of the Sacred Heart of Jesus on July 6, during the Sunset Mass that was presided over by Archbishop Julian Leow. concelebrated with parish priest, Fr Edwin Peter and his assistant, Fr Simon Lau.

The church was packed with parents and sponsors of the confirmands, as well as relatives and friends, besides the regular parishioners.

In his homily, the Kuala Lumpur prelate posed this question to the confirmands, “Are we new persons or the same old persons; as we receive the sacrament, are we the same?” Archbishop Leow went on to reiterate that our faith journey helps us to be closer to Jesus. “The Holy Spirit will come on you today, as you are nourished with the Word of God.”

As baptised and sent Catholics, the prelate told the confirmands, “You are called and sent to follow Jesus. Jesus Christ came to Earth and became one of us as man, to show us who the Father is and what plans He has for us.” The prelate suggested the confirmands start their mission now.

“Yes, we promise that we will follow Jesus as a witness of Christ.”

Addressing the assembly, the prelate said we, the people of God, must pray for the candidates, soon to be confirmed. “Let us pray that we do not strike Jesus from our lives, but pray for lasting faith.”

After Mass, Fr Edwin shared more about this sacrament. He encouraged the young confirmands to be active in church and be witnesses of Jesus in the world. Fr Edwin also spoke about the Upper Room gathering for the young people in his parish, every alternate Thursday with Fr Lau facilitating. He encouraged the confirmands to join this youth gathering.

Meanwhile, Fr Lau explained the Chinese character “B?n” which has the symbol akin to 2 crosses – one large and another smaller. He further added that the character means to rush forward, to hurry, to run quickly. He advised the confirmands not to run away from the church after confirmation but rather, carry their small crosses and run towards Jesus, the larger cross, the Church.

As part of their preparation, the confirmands attended a camp in Outbac Broga conducted by the Antioch Ministry, facilitated by Gerry Alphonse and team in May. The theme chosen was Living in Faith Excitedly, an acronym for LIFE.

Earlier in Dewan Louis Guittat, the 39 candidates, together with the Archbishop and both priests of the parish, posed for a group photo.
