CHERAS: Church of St Francis of Assisi organised a half day formation for lectors, cantors and commentators. This formation was attended by 50 members of the ministry from various language groups.

The day began with Mass at 8.30am, followed by breakfast. Parish priest Fr Andrew Manickam OFM Cap spoke on the roles of lectors.

“Lectors are the mouth pieces of God when they proclaim the readings. When lectors are well prepared, the concluding of the reading will have an earth shaking meaning,” said Fr Andrew.

He then highlighted that the lector carries a sense of purpose at every Mass. The spirit of the Lord is upon them every time they proclaim the reading. The Word of God does not dwell in the communal reading but in the communal hearing,” he said.

Fr Andrew also stressed that lectors on duty should arrive early when they are scheduled to proclaim. “This is to avoid any sort of haste that hinders the reflection of the proclaimer,” he said.

The session then continued with a short briefing on the etiquette of the lectors, commentators and cantors at all Masses and also the proper way to proclaim a reading. — By Lavinia Louis
