A Thanksgiving Mass was celebrated at the Church of St Jude on May 24 for the 25th Sacerdotal Anniversary of Fr Phillips Muthu as a priest in the Archdiocese of Kuala Lumpur.

Approximately 21 priests, including Archbishop Emeritus Anthony Soter Fernandez, were present.

Fr Phillips presided at the Mass for 2,000 faithful. Several Religious Brothers and Sisters were also there. Fr Clarence Devadass, in his homily in English and Bahasa Malaysia, spoke about how Christ’s disciples were transformed, empowered and dedicated to the mission of Jesus entrusted to them. Their hopelessness was turned into hopefulness, after the outpouring of the Holy Spirit upon them on Pentecost. Fr Clarence said we, too, are also empowered today by receiving Him in the sacraments. “We are called to live the life of the Spirit — it brings us joy, love, peace, patience, goodness, gentleness, self-control, truthfulness and faithfulness. Open our hearts and let the fruits of the Spirit flow out of us to others. We are thus called to bring about renewal of our family, society, country and the world.” Fr Surain Dorai Raj translated the homily into Tamil and Mandarin.

Fr Phillips’ ordination theme He is the Potter, I am the Clay, still rings out clearly, after 25 years. Fr Phillips said it is obvious that without God, he is nobody; before God, he is a beggar and God is the Giver.

Fr Phillips thanked all the parishes that he had served over the past 25 years. His appreciation also goes to all those who inspired him to join the seminary and made him into a good priest.
