In an effort to raise consciousness about the importance of IT, the Church of the Holy Name of Jesus Balik Pulau (HNJ) has established the St Paul’s Community Computer Centre (SPCCC).

Launched on September 11 by the Bishop of Penang, Rev Dato’ Sebastian Francis and parish administrator Fr Anthony Liew, SPCCC is aimed at bettering the lives of under privileged children in Balik Pulau with IT skills, knowledge and confidence.

During the launch, Bishop Francis stated that IT shouldn’t be seen as a threat but be embraced as a means to better their lives and strengthen their faith.

SPCCC thus becomes the parish’s continued journey into the digital age after the launch of its website: hnjpenang1854.com last December.

Made possible through the kindness of donors who contributed cash, furniture, computers and IT related items, SPCCC is equipped with computers and teaching facilities to accommodate 18 students.

Held fortnightly on Saturdays, SPCCC kicked off with Phase One on September 17 with 16 children who attended the onehour class. The response for these classes has been overwhelming, with an additional 15 adults signing up.

All students will learn from a syllabus specially designed for this six-month course that will include the basics of operating a computer, Microsoft Office and the Internet.

In the spirit of giving back to society, SPCCC remains non-profit oriented, run by volunteers and welcomes everyone regardless of age, ethnicity, background and creed.

Besides SPCCC, HNJ continues opening her doors to Balik Pulau residents through the setting up of St Catherine Children’s Library, St Nicholas Toy Room, craftsmanship classes and English language classes, which are run by retired Infant Jesus sisters. These facilities and classes are free for Catholics and non-Catholics alike.
