How some parishes in Penang Diocese are staying relevant

Parishes reach out to the Poor during the MoveMent control order

City Parish
The parish has allocated funding to assist welfare centres, supporting non-governmental organi-sations (NGOs) within the parish boundary for their maintenance and efforts in reaching out to the needy.

The parish will also look into the plight of migrants by identifying them and their needs.

Parishioners are encouraged to pray for these outreach initiatives and to help the parish in identifying areas where assistance can be provided by contacting the parish hotline 017-5812818.

There are also daily reflections by Parish Priest Msgr Aloysius Tan in multiple languages and regular updates on church announcements through the parish Facebook page and Word of Hope WhatsApps group.

Cathedral of the Holy Spirit (CHS)
The parish itself has initiated a Covid-19 Response Outreach:

To coordinate calls for assistance and working with BEC zones to reach out to the needy.

Various forms of assistance including the distribution of groceries, medication, medical assistance and transportation and care for elderly.

Parishioners who volunteer for this outreach are required to collect and distribute food items from hypermarkets to those who need it, travel to the hospital to get medication for the homebound or elderly and provide transportation for their check-up appointment or treatment.

Under the Chinese Apostolate, members have raised funds to provide meals such as packed food and they will be delivered to the following organisations throughout the period of the Movement Control Order:

-- BE Home for Special Care, Island Glades
-- Persatuan Kebajikan Anak-Anak OKU
-- Evershine Old Folks Home, Kedah Road.

Church of the Immaculate Conception (CIC)
Setting up of the Parish HelpDesk offering multiple ways a person can get in touch with the Parish, including a Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ) sheet to inform the faithful on what the Parish can offer during the MCO.

Parish ministries and BEC leaders are encouraged to look into respective residential areas to identify the needy and stay in touch with them through phone calls.

The parish has allocated funding and with the Society of St Vincent de Paul (SSVP), has extended food rations and cash assistance to those in need.

Weekly reflections, video messages from parish priest Fr Jude Miranda on the parish’s Facebook page and private Masses are offered for specific BECs or ministries every day.

Church of the Divine Mercy (CDM)
CDM parishioners took part in a Blood Donation Drive at Caring Society Complex March 28 in the midst of the Movement Control Order, providing a much needed boost to the Penang General Hospital’s Blood Bank.

BEC zones and parishioners donated food items and gave monetary assistance to the poor and needy living within the parish boundary.
