KUALA LUMPUR: The Prime Minister ended the feud on the enforcement of hudud between political parties on Sept 24, 2011 saying that the federal government will not adopt the Syariah criminal enactment in Malaysia.

Even though it is God’s law, Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak said hudud is not suitable to be implemented because the government has to be realistic about the country’s current environment.

The prime minister was speaking to reporters in Tanjung Tualang during a one day trip to Perak.

He added that elements of hudud have already been incorporated in the country’s existing legal system minus the extreme part.

The hudud issue resurfaced after former Prime Minister Datuk Seri Dr Mahathir Mohamad challenged PAS led Kelantan to impose the Syariah criminal enactment.

PAS spiritual leader Datuk Nik Aziz Nik Mat then called on Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak to propose amendments to the Federal Constitution to allow hudud to be implemented.

MCA and Gerakan have threatened to pull out of Barisan Nasional if Umno enforces hudud.

On the Opposition side, DAP maintained they will not support PAS’ longstanding bid to implement the Islamic law declaring it would always oppose the establishment of an Islamic state. -- ntv7
