Indian nun wins prestigious HIV/AIDS nursing award

An Indian Catholic nun who is also a nurse has won a prestigious global award for initiating a special curriculum to help with the palliative care of those living with HIV.

NEW DELHI: An Indian Catholic nun who is also a nurse has won a prestigious global award for initiating a special curriculum to help with the palliative care of those living with HIV.

The Association of Nurses in AIDS Care (ANAC) selected Sister Lourdu Mary Nagothu for developing and implementing a curriculum in HIV/AIDS.

Sister Nagothu is a member of the Bangalore province of the Sisters of Jesus, Mary and Joseph.

She will receive the award at a ceremony on Nov. 4, during the ANAC's annual conference at Dallas, Texas in the United States.

"We are pleased to congratulate you on being selected as the recipient of ANAC's Excellence in Global HIV Nursing Award," said an Aug. 2 letter from the association, as reported by mangaloretoday.com.

Sister Nagothu is the director of Nursing at Bel-Air Hospital and the principal of its College of Nursing at Panchgani, a hill station in the western Indian state of Maharashtra.

The hospital and nursing college is an Indian Red Cross Society project managed by Missionary Congregation of the Blessed Sacrament priests as well as the Sisters of Jesus, Mary and Joseph.

The first batch of medical nursing students, who studied the nun's curriculum, completed the course this year from the Maharashtra University of Health Sciences, reported mangaloretoday.com.

The ANAC award recognizes an outstanding nurse, especially those working with limited resources and who have significantly impacted the community by promoting excellence in HIV nursing care, outstanding leadership and innovation.--ucanews.com
