A Bishop, priests and young Catholics in Indonesia’s Ruteng Diocese have dedicated a specially composed song to medical and frontline workers to boost morale in their fight against the Covid-19 coronavirus that has killed more than 1,000 people, including more than 50 doctors and nurses.

The song — Kamu untuk Kita (You’re meant for us) — was posted on the diocese’s YouTube channel on May 28 and has been viewed nearly 9,000 times. It has also gone viral among social media groups.

Bishop Siprianus Hormat is featured in a video singing along with several priests, including the diocese’s Caritas chief, Father Yuvensius Rugi, and a group of young Catholics.

The lyrics include the line: "Tirelessly, even people don't care, you are not afraid of the lurking danger ... Your conscience is always awake, you stay in the forefront, on your shoulders hope is entrusted."

“We tried to encourage our medical workers and volunteers who work tirelessly against the Covid-19 pandemic,” said Bishop Hormat.

He said the diocese had been supporting medical and frontline workers by donating much-needed supplies, and the song was additional support to let them know that they were doing a great thing for society.

"We will also continue to provide food assistance to other groups such as people with disabilities, widows and elderly people,” Bishop Hormat said. “Also for those who have lost their jobs due to the pandemic.”

Sister Maria Naki of the Congregation of Servants of the Holy Spirit, director of St. Raphael Hospital in Cancar in Manggarai district, said she felt “moved” after hearing the song.

“We believe that our shepherds support us not only through the song. We are sure they pray for us constantly for our service at this critical time," she said.

Norsin Daros, a Catholic nurse working at Jakarta’s Wisma Atlet Hospital, said she had watched the video of the bishop and priests singing.

“I feel the support, which inspires me to continue serving patients," she said.

She said she moved to the hospital in April from a private one in response to calls for additional staff to help Covid-19 patients.

"The support of the bishop and priests gives me the strength to be able to continue this service,” she said, adding that she always takes time to pray that God will continue to protect her and help her remain steadfast in her work.

As of May 31, the number of Covid-19 infections in Indonesia had reached 26,473 with 1,613 deaths.--ucanews.com
