KUALA LUMPUR: Prayer, Fasting, Almsgiving! Caring for our Common Home! Extraordinary Missionary Year (EMY)!

With so many ideas, focuses and themes that are crying and shouting out aloud at us especially through the internet and social media, the question is “Which one do we exactly follow?”

This was among the questions that Fr Edwin Peter posted to the parishioners of the Church of the Sacred Heart Kuala Lumpur on th eFirst Sunday of Lent.

Perhaps, he said, the way forward was to integrate all three – namely, our traditional Lenten observances with the Archdiocesan Lenten Campaign and the EMY call.

He corelated the traditional Lenten observance of prayer, fasting and almsgiving with the three EMY dimensions of, Encounter with Jesus, Testimony of Mission and Missionary Charity respectively.

These were linked to thanking God for the gift of his creation;Living out a personal Testimony of Mission, for example by “fasting”from plastics; and being charitable through the “3Rs” of caring for environment, animals and mankind through Reduce-Reuse-Recycle.

Each Christian who is Baptisedand Sent has a missionary responsibility this Lent. For a start following the guidelines of the Archdiocesan Lenten Campaign’s weekly call to action, he invited the parishioners to discover the main points of Pope Francis’ Encyclical Laudato Si’ as part of Missionary Formation for this Lenten journey in this Extraordinary Missionary Year.
