In commemorating its 55 years of existence as a parish, the Assumption Church celebrated her parish feastday with a Novena to Our Lady of Perpetual Help from Aug 7 to 15.

The theme was Mary, Our Companion On Life’s Journey. There were two sessions daily — at noon, and again, at 5.30 pm. The novena was followed by Mass. The sermons were preached by various priests including Fr George, Fr Patrick Massang, Fr Paul Kee, Fr Simon Labrooy and parish priest, Fr Patrick Boudville.

On Aug 15, which was the actual feast of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary, there were three Masses. The Church was packed at the evening Mass. Fr Simon Labrooy from Subang Jaya presided together with Fr Paul Kee CSsR, Fr Patrick Massang CSsR from Ipoh, parish priest Fr Patrick Boudville and Fr Andrew Volle MEP concelebrating. The sub-theme was Mary, Our Lady of Assumption.

Fr Kee in his homily said the Assumption of Mary is not just a feast in her honour, but a feast for all who follow Christ closely. “No other has served Jesus so devotedly and closely as His mother, Mary. Praying to Mary will only lead us closer to Jesus,” Fr Kee stressed.

“Mary was blessed among all women. She believed that the promise made to her by God would be fulfilled. Mary’s assumption is a feast that flows from the Easter resurrection. It is her feast but also our feast, as it affirms our hope of being with Jesus in heaven. The feast of the Assumption celebrates Mary’s journey to heaven at the end of her earthly life. We celebrate the Assumption of Mary which is an extension of the celebration of Christ Risen (Resurrection) and also the hope and joy of our new life to come.”

Fr Kee said that just like Mary, we too, one day, will be present with Jesus as Mary is present with Jesus. Mary is a sign of hope for all of us believers.

Death has been destroyed and all who belong to Christ will be raised to heaven. God called, a lowly peasant girl, to be the Mother of Jesus Christ. Mary’s assumption completes her participation in this mystery of our faith, the Resurrection of Jesus.

“She intercedes for us to the Lord. When we celebrate this feast, we affirm our belief of our assumption to come,” exclaimed Fr Kee. On Aug 16, there was a special Mass for children held in the morning. After the Sunset Mass, a community dinner was held in the church hall/grounds for all parishioners.

The celebration culminated with a procession in honour of Our Lady of Assumption on Sunday, Aug 17 after the evening Mass, around the Church's vicinity.

Souvenirs to commemorate the Parish 55th Anniversary, in the form of fridge magnets and a book, Memorable Moments With The Lord by Barbs a parishioner, were also on sale.

The parish’s 21 BEC banners were also displayed at the balcony railings in the church. Fr Simon wished all a Happy Feastday and mentioned the victims of MH17 families, Iraq Christians persecuted and the victims of the conflict in Gaza.
