On October 7, 2017, the Catholic Student Council (CCS) of the Archdiocese of Kota Kinabalu held its 19th Campus Students’ Day at the Sacred Heart Cathedral. Ten students, three from University Malaysia Sabah (UMS), Sandakan Branch, five from Polytechnic Sandakan and two from the Education Institute of Teachers, Tawau campus, representing the Diocese of Sandakan, participated. There were also 300 participants from campuses around Kota Kinabalu, Keningau and Sandakan.

The programme began with Mass, followed by an ice-breaking session and praise and worship. The first session on Faith, Hope and Love was presented by Ms Serena. She spoke about her life as a student and her experiences as a missionary in an institute of higher learning overseas.

Next was information on the Synod on Youth 2018. The participants were told that there is a website – talk2francismy – dedicated to the questionnaire which requires the cooperation of all Catholic and non-Catholic youth to share their experiences on how the Catholic Church can support the youth and help them choose their mission in life. All these issues will be discussed at a Synod of the Bishops with Pope Francis.

The following session, entitled Living the Word of God in our Life was also given by Ms Serena who said that the title of the session is linked to the Bible. She asked the participants to focus on daily readings of the Bible and told them that faith alone is not enough. She stressed that the students need to pray and practise “eating” the Word of God and asked the students to work with groups of friends who want to grow in Christ and to be thankful for everything.

The final session was What do I need to do after this? was conducted by Mr Paulus. He invited the participants to remember all they had learned in Sessions I and II and to practise every day to strengthen their faith and to become excellent Catholic students.

The highlight of the programme was Theatrical Night which featured an actor who delivered a special message based on the theme of the camp taken from the Gospel of St Luke 1:49 for the Mighty One has done great things for me, and holy is his name. We hope that the Catholic students who attended the 19th Campus Students’ Day will share what they have learned with other Catholic students on their campuses and that they will also grow stronger in their faith.
