Seventy-six leaders from the various ministries of the Church of the Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary (NBVM) and Sts Chastan and Imbert (SCIC) attended the 2019 Parish Leaders Assembly at SCIC on February 24 to review the activities of 2018 and plan for 2019.

The PPC chairman, Stephen Chin, highlighted that the preparation for this meeting has been going on since August 2018, with the Leaders Retreat at St Anne’s where the parish leaders decided on the Vision, Mission and slogan. In addition, the parish priest, Fr Dominic Santhiyagu, held dialogue sessions with various groups — migrants, youths and general parishioners, to understand their joys, sorrows and needs. This is in line with the vision of the parish which is, Christ Centred Magnetic community of Peace, Love and Hope. The mission encompasses five aspects — unity, welcoming, word of God, family and participation with the slogan My Church My Home.

A short praise and worship was led by Fr Louis Loi. Following that was the sharing of the Word of God from 1 Cor 3: 9-11 and an inspirational video of a 23 year old girl who decided to change the lives of 200 orphans in Nepal. Fr Dom then explained that we can make a difference in this world. We are all leaders. We have been given the gift of people in our parish. He said, “make a difference in the parish now, be beacons of hope to others. This is our call for this year of mission.”

Discussions from the leaders to improve on the needs of the parishioners was noted. A short recap of events that took place in 2018 was projected. The focus was on the planning of spiritual formations and social events in line with the Extraordinary Missionary Year. The assembly decided that the parish will look into formations such as the Alpha Programme, Little Rock Bible Programme, Theology of the Body for the family, High Praise and Worship 2, spiritual formations by invited speakers, pilgrimages, World Migrants Day and sending out 72 missionaries. The 72 missionaries is based on the Gospel of Luke “He sent these disciples out two-by-two as well” (Luke 10:1) and these missionaries will receive formation and will be sent out to serve and preach. The social events include the Parish Picnic and Nature walk and other Fundraising Projects like Fundraising dinner and the Christian Business Expo (CBE).

Updates were given on the Pastoral Building Project Fund. Currently, the project is ahead of schedule. In addition, the finance committee hoped that the parishioners would increase their contributions towards the maintenance of the church this year. The meeting ended with a simple fellowship and blessing from Fr Dom.
