For many in the Melaka-Johor Diocese, the death of Canossian Sr Winnie Tan in Kluang came as a shock. She died on September 11.

Aged 73, Sr Winnie who was educated at Singapore’s St Anthony’s Convent, entered the Novitiate at Oxley, Brisbane and made her final vows with the Canossian Daughters of Charity (FDCC) religious community in Vimercate, Italy in March 1970.

Upon securing her trainee teacher certification from Singapore’s Institute of Education she taught at the Kluang Canossian Convent, Melaka’s Sacred Heart Convent and the Portuguese Settlement Canossa Convent between 1970 and 1978.

Following her teaching tenure, Sr Winnie’s pastoral portfolio included stints as Catechesis Coordinator for the Melaka-Johor Diocese (1978-1980); Superior and Provincial Councillor of the Segamat and Kluang Canossian Convents (1983-1985); Jinjang Canossian Convent (1985-1989); the Kuala Lumpur Archdiocese National Office of Human Development (1989-1994); Shah Alam’s Montfort Boys Town (1994-2000) Superior and Provincial Councillor, Delegate Superior of Kluang’s Villa Maddalena; Kluang and Segamat Canossian Convents and Delegate Superior at Convent Segamat between 1985 and 2014.

She lived an exemplary and prayerful life, was generous with others and always with the Canossian mission close to her heart.

Her love for the marginalised, poor and less fortunate was another hallmark that came to the forefront while serving at the Portuguese Setlement.

Battling cancer since early this year, Sr Winnie still managed to be in touch with her religious community, family and close friends via her laptop while undergoing treatment at a local medical centre.

She was laid to rest in Kluang following a funeral service at St Louis Church presided by Frs Cyril and Micheal Mannayagam, M. Devadason, Moses Lui and Mark Tee.
