Diocesan Seminarian Stephen Esguerra was ordained a transitional deacon by Bishop Julius Dusin Gitom Oct 28 at St Mary’s Cathedral.

His ordination theme was Do not let your hearts be troubled, but put your trust in God. (John 14:1).

“As a deacon, you will serve the Lord with humility and serve others with love and joy. Be like Christ, who came not to be served but to serve. Have a good Spirit filled reputation. Your service must be a reflection of the true service of Christ. Your life has been renewed in Christ and thus your life must be lived like Christ, and for Christ, so serve Christ and others with a free will and be a witness of Christ so God is praised,” said Bishop Julius.

The Cathedral’s Parish priest, Fr David Garaman, thanked Msgr Nicholas Ong, and priests and religious for their presence. “I thank God for blessing the Diocese of Sandakan with a new deacon in the person of Deacon Stephen. The Lord provides labourers in His Vineyard.”

Fr David also commended all those involved in the celebration, led by Michael Lai, and those involved in the preparation, lunch (hall) and in church (ordination) and all sponsors. “We thank and praise God, and pray that He will  send more workers into His vineyard.”

Bishop Julius thanked all the priests for coming and Fr Francis from the Seminary for his presence. The prelate also mentioned the presence of the religious and those faithful coming from other parishes to pray for Deacon Stephen.

The prelate told the assembly that God calls all the time but we must respond to His call, not just as individuals but as a community. “Guide your children and tell them about this vocation (priesthood and religious) and promote vocations in your family and community.”
