JOHOR BARU: A long-time collaborator with the New Straits Times’ Newspaper-in-Education (NIE) programme, Vincent D’Silva (pic) won the Iskandar Malaysia Social Hero Award (IMSHA) in the education advancement individual category.

D’Silva is also a contributor to the HERALD. The English lecturer is also the man behind the annual Johor English Language Conference, for which NST has been the official paper. He was among 20 individuals and non-governmental organisations who won awards that recognise the movers and shakers in the southern state.

“I am honoured to receive the award. I feel humbled. My mission in helping teachers and students will not end here,” he said after receiving his plaque and trophy from IMSHA patron Tun Musa Hitam at Holiday Villa Hotel on Nov 3.

D’Silva paid tribute to his own teachers. He said educators sacrificed to ensure that their students became successful without forgetting their values.

“As educationists, we do not live for ourselves as we are at a critical stage of nation building, where we are expected to produce Malaysians who take pride in the good values of the country, and are progressive as well.”

D’Silva had trained English teachers and students in the NST-NIE for the past 20 years. These workshops utilised the NST as a teaching and learning tool, and have led teachers to increasingly use the newspaper in the language classroom. -- NST
