KOTA KINABALU: Against the commonly accepted daily belief that perfect love is only possible in a movie, Archbishop John Wong said that though perfect love is difficult, it is a doable action. Perfect love was the theme of the Archbishop’s homily during the Holy Thursday celebration, attended by about four thousand Catholics at the Sacred Heart Cathedral, Kota Kinabalu.

The Prelate commented that the Holy Thursday’s ‘washing of feet’, though just as an imitation of Jesus’s action, is also an opportunity to spiritually anticipate the meaning of the action itself. By quoting St Paul’s concept of the servanthood of Jesus, the archbishop said that only by emptying oneself, through an action of getting down to one’s knees, we would be able to understand the concept of love which Jesus has set forward during the Last Supper. Jesus took the servant’s task of washing the feet of His disciples to set an example of the meaning of ‘love in action’.

The prelate added that the very first condition of perfect love is to constantly ‘get down on our knees’ – that is putting aside our personal preoccupations and conditions – and wash each other’s feet – friends and enemy alike.
