VATICAN: “The transmission of faith can only take place in a dialect, in the dialect of the family, of father and mother, of grandfather and grandmother.” This is what Pope Francis emphasised during Mass for the Feast of the Baptism of the Lord, in which he administered the sacrament of baptism to 34 newborns, 16 boys and 18 girls. The celebration took place in the Sistine Chapel, during which the pontiff gave a short off-the-cuff homily.

“Baptism,“ he said, “is the first step. We need the Holy Spirit to transmit the faith. And this is why you come here to baptise your babies. The transmission of the faith can only take place in the family. Later on, the catechists will develop this transmission with ideas and explanations ... And if the dialect is missing, if the language of love is not spoken at home, the transmission is not so easy, it will not be possible. Do not forget this. Your task is to transmit the faith, but by doing it with the dialect of love, of your home, of the family.

“They too — the children — speak the dialect. The dialect of children. And Jesus advises us to be like them, to speak like them. We must not forget to talk like them. In your prayers tell Jesus the simple things you need, as children do.”

Speaking of the “language of children,” the pontiff concluded, “If the children cry because they are cold, they are hot, they are hungry, feed them, without fear. This is also a language of love.” --Asianews
