KUALA LUMPUR: The Retrouvaille weekend was held again in Kuala Lumpur following a successful 1st Retrouvaille that was held in January 2018.

Retrouvaille is a French word for “Rediscovery”. It caters to all couples of any faith experiencing trials and troubles in their marriages. This powerful live-in weekend programme had its beginnings in North America and is now conducted in all the different continents of the world

With the blessing of Archbishop Julian Leow and the efforts of Fr Edwin Peter together with the Archdiocesan Family Life Commission’s Retrouvaille Committee, the second Retrouvaille weekend in Malaysia was held in Kuala Lumpur February 15-17, 2019. Nine couples took home an experience of a lifetime.

The presenting team was Fr Arul Raj from India, Jerry and Monette, and Raymond and Zeny from the Philippines, and Joseph and Anita from Kuala Lumpur.

Troubled and hurting marriages now have a lifeline available to them – they can get specialised help from the Retrouvaille programme.

Archbishop Leow urged hurting couples to avail themselves of this enrichment programme. He emphasised that the
Archdiocese of Kuala Lumpur cares about all couples facing crisis and problems and this programme is one way of helping. “The Retrouvaille Weekend will now provide a programme specially aimed at healing troubled and hurting marriages,” said the Archbishop. He also encouraged the participating couples to persevere in their relationships and to make their marriages holy.

His Grace also added that Family Life is one of the eight priorities of the Archdiocese of Kuala Lumpur, and that the Church wanted to reach out to married couples in distress through such enrichment programmes.

Fr Edwin Peter, one of the Ecclesiastical Assistants to the Archdiocesan Family Life Commission of Kuala Lumpur who also participated in this Retrouvaille weekend, said that the Retrouvaille programme helps married couples who have serious challenges, are struggling to stay together, separated or divorced to rediscover themselves and to try again.

If the couples are willing to work at their relationship, the programm offers some hope and can help couples put the pieces back together in rebuilding their once loving relationships,” said Fr Edwin, who is also parish priest of the Church of the Sacred Heart in KL.

Fr Edwin assured that Retrouvaille will help couples discover how listening, forgiveness, communication and the dialogue process are powerful aids and when put into practice can provide a foundation for building a loving and lasting relationship. He added that the Retrouvaille weekend is not a magic guarantee but it is the beginning of a process of healing which is continued in the vitally important post-weekend sessions.

Joseph and Anita Pragasam, chair couple of Archdiocese Family Life Commission, added that the Church is very concerned with the increasing number of separations and divorces leading to the breakdown and fragmentation of families. They mentioned that the Retrouvaille weekend is a good avenue for hurting couples to rekindle their love in a safe environment in total privacy and confidentiality.

Explaining further, they said that the Retrouvaille programme begins with a weekend experience that helps couples gain new insights into themselves as individuals and as a couple. This awareness of self and spouse will help them learn to re-establish communication and set them on the path to reconciliation.

“During the Retrouvaille Weekend, couples will be encouraged to put the past behind them, and to look beyond the hurt and pain in order to rediscover each other in a new and positive way,” said the Pragasams.
