May 31, 2017 is recorded in the history of the Taiping Catholic Church as it marks the day the shrine of Our Lady of Fatima was installed and blessed in the compound of the Chapel of Our Lady of Fatima, Pokok Assam, Taiping. This was to commemorate the 100th Anniversary of the apparition of Our Lady in Fatima, Portugal. The shrine was built by the joint contributions of the parishioners and the parish.

Though it started raining in the early hours of the day, with the intercession of Our Lady and the prayers of the faithful, the weather improved to allow for an open-air Mass.

An unexpected crowd of faithful gathered to join in the celebration with Rosary and Mass. A joyful fellowship followed.

Twentieth Sunday of Ordinary Time: That woman is Ourselves

Mark calls her “a Greek” but Matthew uses the ancient name “Canaanite,” a reference to the original inhabitants of the Holy Land, who were conquered by the Israelites some twelve centuries before the time of Jesus. Matthew recognises that this encounter between the woman from the area of Tyre and Sidon and Jesus is about an outsider “wanting in.” So he heightens the drama by identifying her as a member of that group of pagans who were Israel’s first enemies (after the Egyptians, of course).
