A point of reference to learn the pulse of the Church here

Prot. 1824/M/19
Kuala Lumpur, September 8, 2019
Feast of the Nativity of Blessed Virgin Mary

It is a singular honour for me to greet Rev Fr Lawrence Andrew, SJ, Editor of HERALD and the entire staff on the occasion of the 25th Anniversary of the first publication of this Catholic weekly which took place in the Cathedral of St John the Evangelist on September 8, 1994.

During these twenty-five years, HERALD has remained faithful to its goals and mission in providing up-to-date news and Christian values, striving to foster dialogue with all sectors of society, building a harmonious community of people of faith and setting the foundation for a synodal Church with the active participation of all the Christian faithful.

This publication was the dream and vision of now Cardinal Anthony Soter Fernandez, Archbishop Emeritus of Kuala Lumpur, who saw the need to have a constant and stable publication in order to edify the Christian community in their faith and to provide a truly Catholic perspective of current events and newsworthy items. His dream became a reality, and today HERALD can be considered a weekly “catechism” solidifying the faith of the people and their commitment to instill Christian values in their daily lives.

Ever since my arrival in Kuala Lumpur as Apostolic Nuncio, HERALD has been a point of reference to learn the pulse of the Church in Peninsular Malaysia, its everyday life, its aspirations and its challenges. In that context, it always gives me great joy to see printed in this weekly newspaper the teachings of Pope Francis, especially his call to create a culture of encounter among all peoples.

In that regard, I wish to refer to these words of our Holy Father, who in his Message on Social Communications Day 2018, affirmed: “I would like to invite everyone to promote a journalism of peace ... a journalism created by people, for people, one that is at the service of all, especially those — and they are the majority in our world — who have no voice” (January 24, 2018).

In closing, I wish to congratulate HERALD for its remarkable achievements during these twenty-five years of service to the Church. May the Good Lord, through the intercession of the Blessed Virgin Mary, continue to bestow his blessings upon all who are a part of this important ministry.

Apostolic Nuncio

Pray that HERALD will continue its excellent service to the Church

Dear Editor,

“I join all other good wishers in offering my whole hearted congratulations to you and to all the dedicated staff, both the past and the present, on the silver jubilee of the excellent HERALD. I have been a faithful reader of this paper right from the first issue to this of vol 26 no. 34.

“It has given a great service to the Church in our land.

“I pray it will continue to serve our Church for many years to come.

“Thank you, Fr Lawrence for this paper and for all the hardship you have had to maintain its publication.  May the Lord bless you for your determination and perseverance in keeping this paper coming into the hands of readers like myself.

“Since many months now I receive two complementary copies of this paper. I thank you and I have given the second copy to our St Joseph Private School.”

Gratefully yours,
Peter Chung,
Archbishop Emeritus of Kuching
