A place to be courageously vulnerable with God, friends and a space to create new friendships.

This was what the three days two nights stayin camp was about. Soul Sisters was back again for the fourth year to continue their mission to create a space of belonging where each young girl feels worthy of her calling to be a missionary disciple. This year, things were a tad bit different with 24 girls in attendance. This paved the way for us to dive deeper into conversation on our identity in Christ, relationship with Him and others, and our freedom.

The camp kickstarted with an icebreaker version of Bingo. This required the girls to approach each other and introduce themselves in order to match the criteria on their Bingo sheet. Though it may be a forgotten game to many, this version of Bingo was a hit amongst the girls. To launch the opening of The Word, the  girls, together with the facilitators, participated at the 1.00pm Mass at the Church of the Divine Mercy, Shah Alam.

This was followed by lunch, a couple of energisers and a group activity for the anticipated discussions. They particularly enjoyed the expectation check, which allowed the girls to express their reason for choosing to attend this camp which also gave them an opportunity to listen and discover each other’s present season in life.

The girls boldly explored subjects like relationships, the difference between love and lust, Theology of The Body, their identity in God, and His constant love for all. The speakers used real-life examples to deliver these topics so that the content was relatable and relevant. There were heaps of discussions in between the sessions for the girls to share their thoughts on the subject and also their personal experiences  pertaining to it.

The camp continued with games, followed by a programme called Dancing with the Lord. It was a space and time to worship and praise God with dancing and singing. One of the participants even stepped up and volunteered to lead everyone in dance. This lasted about an hour — the girls then proceeded to Creative Night, a Soul Sisters tradition. This was to encourage the groups to prepare a performance of sorts to bless their fellow sisters with their gifts and talents. This year was a little bit different as the facilitators were required to join in the performances too! It was a night of great fun, filled with laughter, dancing, affirmations, and unity.

On the last day, the girls were then introduced to the Father’s Love Letter, a biblical video of God personally expressing His love to each one of the girls. The speaker then invited everyone  to write two letters — one to God and another to self. It was evident that the girls were moved by God’s love as the room was filled with quiet sobbing. This was also an initiative to encourage the girls to participate in an intimate prayer life filled with sacred and personal conversations with God.

It is indisputable that the girls had a blessed and fruitful time at camp. Many were exchanging numbers and already making plans to attend the follow-ups. Rachel Wong, the leader of the Soul Sisters, shared that the relationships forged and experiences encountered in the camp will continue on through regular meetups and journeying with each other towards becoming missionary disciples of Jesus Christ. This definitely is a community for all young Catholic women to consider being a part of and discovering who God is and who we are in Him.
