Bishop Sebastian Francis celebrated the first public Mass for the Minor Basilica of St Anne on June 28 with 250 leaders and members of the parish groups and ministries.

The English Mass was celebrated by Bishop Sebastian, with Fr Nelson Joseph concelebrating and Deacon Lazarus assisting.

“Even though we have been unable to gather in churches since March, all priests and bishops have  been offering daily Masses for all of you, for all pilgrims and devotees of St Anne’s, Bukit Mertajam,” said Bishop Sebastian.

“Throughout the MCO, you were obliged to worship the Lord in spirit and truth wherever you were, in your own creative way. This obligation was not taken away.”

He also took this opportunity to thank Deacon Lazarus and the team of collaborators and leaders who are working behind the scenes.

“We accepted the challenge to re-open the church today. The SOP was given to us by the government through the Ministry of Unity and the Ministry of Health and together with the state of Penang and the Malaysian Bishops. Thank you for your determination, perseverance and, most importantly, your discipline. Our first Mass today went really smoothly. Continue in the same spirit.”
