IPOH (Herald Malaysia): St Michael's Church (SMC) Indian Community celebrated the Harvest festival Ponggal on Jan 25 by preparing a special breakfast for the parishioners. As in past years, a clay pot filled with milk, rice and other ingredients was placed over a fire for it to boil over.

It was not just a symbol of the overflowing of God's goodness in providing a bountiful harvest for man, but a more gracious gesture that said "welcome" and good wishes for the New Year to all.

The sweetened brpwn rice and chick peas was served with a hot cup of coffee, after the Mass.

SMC parish priest Fr Stephen Liew wished the Indians a Happy Ponggal and asked parishioners to join in the celebration at the parish hall.

Earlier in his homily, Fr Liew said that to become disciples of Christ, there were just two conditions to fulfill.

"You have to come (to Jesus) and then go (forth) to spread the Good News," he said.

The first words of Jesus in Mark's Gospel gives the core of his teaching - that He had come to break the power of sin and begin God's personal reign on earth.

The disciples who were called were fishermen, and they had to grow in their faith, as they followed Jesus. Yet they came to Him and followed Him, until they were peady to go out.

In the same way as the disciples, we too, must follow Jesus to bring about God's kingdom on earth.

CAPA 2015 began with an assessment of what the faithful expect of the clergy. Many expectations were voiced out, among which was how the clergy are often placed on a pedestal by the laity and, at the same time, expected to function like `supermen'. The clergy also assessed.
