KUALA LUMPUR: In a small church 45km southwest of the city, some 700 Catholics celebrated the dawn of the new decade singing praises to “Allah”.
Father Lawrence Andrew, parish priest of the Church of St Anne, usually conducts Mass in Bahasa Malaysia on Sundays for the benefit of the 200 East Malaysians who have joined his parish in Port Klang.
But he decided to preach in the national language last night after the High Court delivered judgment which overjoyed Christians nationwide.
“It's a special Mass,” Lawrence told The Malaysian Insider over the phone yesterday evening.
“Allah is no longer prohibited to us,” he said, the smile coming through the phone line.
“My parish is small but there's a growing number of Sarawakians who have been coming to church. I use Bahasa Malaysia because English to them is a foreign language. And the younger generation too are able to understand Bahasa,” he explained.
The government had first banned the church from using the word “Allah” in a Christian context three years ago in the Catholic newpaper Herald, allegedly to avoid confusing the majority Muslims who also use the word for their God.
The church sued when the Home Ministry threatened to take back the publishing permit, which is required to be renewed every year.
Lawrence said he has been invited to preach in Kota Kinabalu tomorrow and will be doing so in Bahasa Malaysia as well.
According to census figures in Sabah, about 2.45 million people there are Christian while in Sarawak, Malaysia's largest state, statistics show 43 per cent of the population is Christian.
But Lawrence believes the figures are outdated and there are more Christians now in Borneo. He puts the figures in Sarawak closer to half the population.
The next census is due to be carried out in the middle of this year, according to the national Statistics Department.
The High Court yesterday ruled the Home Ministry ban was against the Federal Constitution which protects the rights of minorities.
Judge Datuk Lau Bee Lan declared the Herald has the constitutional right to publish the word “Allah” to refer to the Christian God.
She also struck out a second attempt by seven Muslim groups to join the Home Ministry in stopping the church, overturning a long-held but mistaken belief among some of the majority Muslims in the country that the word is exclusive to Islam.
Herald is the only Catholic paper in the country and has been in print for the past 20 years. Some 14,000 people subscribe to the weekly, which is limited for sale within church premises.
To cater to the diverse ethnicities in Malaysia, it publishes in four languages: English, Malay, Chinese and Tamil.
The church had last year applied to the Home Ministry to also publish in the Kadazandusun language but was turned down.
Lawrence, who edits Herald, told The Malaysian Insider that he was “very happy” with the court's decision, as was the Archbishop of Kuala Lumpur, Tan Sri Murphy Pakiam, named as the publisher when informed late yesterday evening.
The priest-editor said Catholics can look forward to reading articles which contain the world “Allah” again from Jan 10, when the next print issue of Herald comes out.
The online version of Herald (http://www.heraldmalaysia.com/) will include stories on “Allah” immediately.
But, Lawrence was quick to add he would not publish the word “Allah” just for the sake of putting it in.
“Only when it is relevant and we are quoting from Scriptures and the word is used,” he stressed.
The church had held back from publishing material containing the word “Allah” for the past two years, while waiting for the court outcome.
Despite the court's judgment, a Malay-Muslim politician from the ruling party continued to probe the Church's real reasons for pushing a Malay medium for its worship.
“What is their motive? Why all of a sudden they want to use the word 'Allah' when all this while they have been using the term God?” Datuk Tajuddin Abdul Rahman shot back when asked to comment by The Malaysian Insider.
“This is definitely provocation, they are just using all this human rights, religious rights as excuses. This is sensitive to the Muslims and this will create racial and religious tension,” the Pasir Salak MP said.
Lawrence was in the crowded court yesterday for the decision but rushed back to his parish to prepare for the special midnight worship to usher in the new year.
In his single-page statement, he welcomed the “long-awaited decision which clearly upholds the socio-cultural and anthropological body of evidence of the Christian people of the Malay archipelago, now Malaysia, in using the word 'Allah'.”
“We wish to state that the hearsay statements claiming that we have been using the word 'Allah' only recently is misleading and does not hold up to the rigour of historical scrutiny,” the priest said, referring to a Malay-Latin dictionary from 1631 which he claims is among the first-ever dictionaries printed in relation to the Malay language.
“This also means that the Bahasa Malaysia-speaking community of the Christian faith can now continue to freely use the word 'Allah' — a word that has been in their worship and instructions in the faith — without any interference from the authorities,” he said.

In the Western and Middle East Countries, Muslims try their best to li
nk their Quran with Our Bible, but here in Malaysia the opposite way, because the Malaysian Govt. did not allowed us Christian to us Allah in our Bahasa prayer, I think much better for us to drop that word and repalce with other name that we think much suitable. We may use Yahweh/Jehovah/Father (Bapa). We pray our Father in Bahasa also we use "Bapa". Jesus our Lord call God Father. Allah is Arab God, Allah is not the Bible God, sine the Government of Malaysia didnot allowed us to use the word Allah, so this is the best time for us to change it. No doubt we have been using it for hundreds of years, for that numbers of years also we pray to the wrong GOD. I believed it was wrongly transtlation. Let the Muslims pray to Allah and Christians pray to God, let us totaly separated.
May God Bless us All.

For those whose mother tongue is B.Malaysia to use "Allah" to mean God offends the Muslims in West Malaysia, to use the term "Yahweh" it would offend the Jews and on June 29, 2008, the Vatican has issued an edict that the Tetragrammarton never be used in the liturgy. So, which word now that one should use that does not offend anybody? I wonder...

1 John 5:7 "(God) the Father, (God) the Word (Jesus the Son of God also!?), and (God) the Holy Ghost (Spirit); and these three are one," has been expunged in the RSV of 1952 and 1971 and in many other Bibles as a gloss that had encroached in the Greek text. Check it out!

Dear the Catholic Observer: You Trinitarians already know for a fact to still having your constitutional rights for freedom of worship by using Tuhan Bapa dan Dewata Yesus Kristus or preferably Elohim Bapa and Theos Yesus Kristus without using the term 'Allah' at all for your prayers and worship services to be valid and acceptable. So, janganlah sampai mengada-gada lagi mahukan kalimah 'Allah' in Trinity pula. If you Catholic Observer can explain without any confusion that the Trinity does NOT imply 3 Gods, then I challenge you to prove that the Trinity is about one God without being NOT only confusing but also gibberish. Would you the Catholic Observer accept my challenge here or to my email address: MohammadAriffSaidin@hotmail.com

To Yusof--as a Muslim you should learn to be polite. Why are you using 4 letter fowl word and cursing others? Is this how a good Muslim should behave? Pls show the good side of Islam- not what you have commented is right. As for Hamba Allah- you said all Muslims will fight till the end...by the way PAS, PKR and many Muslims have already said they agreed with Herald to use Allah to denote God in Bahasa Malaysia as in the Quran it is allowed. So guess you are different..maybe someone who only think of fighting and this is bad!
To Hassan--why must you snubbed and blamed the Judge? Is this because she is a Chinese? Come on grow up and be more mature. Remember 1Malaysia our Prime Minister wanted to implement for all citizens? You must be unfair in your judgement!
To panan--pls dont try to lie to be a Penan. You are only here to show seed of disunity. The mainly poor Penans have been very happy to Christians for helping them when the state government cant seem to be helping them much... To Jihad--Hukum Hudud is for Muslims--you want to get your hand chopped off for stealing? If most Muslims countries dont implement such laws to muslims- why you trying to asked the Christians to use it? Allah issue got nothing to do with your type of laws..
To thinker--pls think more deeper..Christians using Allah only when they pray in Bahasa Malaysia or Malay to denote God..Of course God the Almighty. Do you think we beleived in three Gods? Pls do read the Bible first before you can get the right concept of the Trinity. Cheers

If you want to refer Allah as God then you have to follow and obey Hukum Hudud which have been commanded by Allah!

Christian shouldn't use the word 'ALLAH' to refer as their God.As ALLAH is none like christian's concepts in God,which is 'trinity'.As ALLAH is a single all mighty God,who wasn't been born neither giving birth. But if christian insist to use the word and refer their God as ALLAH,then practic single supreme understanding in Theology, which is 'There is no God than ALLAH..' and dismiss all the trinity concepts in God..and perhaps, may christian able to see and admit,'Muhammad' is the last Prophet..and he is for all generation and race.Well, actually, it's a good start for knowing and admitting that 'ALLAH' is the only God..and not two or three, but there is only one..with no son.

Its really sadden me to see the issue of Allah being taken to human court. Allh is the heavenly almighty judge and yet instead of showing utmost respect, we made a mockery out of his Name by taking Him to court. The malay muslim leaders with the excuse of protecting Allah. Allah need protection or they are just protecting their own political popularity? And this catholic leaders with the excuse of religious right and freedom? And who is the judge for the suits? Another God? No, the judge is another human being too. What is happening to Malaysia and the Malaysians leaders, be it political leaders or religious leaders, Please, all of you can play your human games but dont mess around and get the Allmighty involve in ur tussle over this worldly gain. Both the Malay-Muslim leaders and the Catholic leaders are sick, sick beyond healing. Do you ever imagine that such a thing can happen in a supposedly well-mannered malaysia? Allah being judge in court? Do you people realy care to imagine the situation, God being taken to court for who have the right to use his name? Are you going to call Him to the witness stand and testifies who have the right and who doesnt? Stop this crap, for the sake of the sincere believers of both Islam and Christianity. Don't drag us along in this game

The catholic brand of Christian is really obnoxious. Only oddities adhere to it in UK.
Now they try to influence the tribal people of Sabah and Sarawak.
The Penans have their own belief which is superior to Catholics. So do the Kadazans. Their rice festivals is something to behold. And they have no false modesty like puritans christians to clothing who clothe them the first time they proselytise to the tribes people.

You fucking kelings are always creating trouble in Malaysia.
If it is not the Hindus Keling pariahs then it is the Kristian Keling pariahs.
How does a pariah like pukiam get a tan sri from agung when he insulted islam and the Agung by equating Allah as Kristians.
You fucking keling should stop provoking the malays.

The Christians are liars. The population of Sabah is only 1.8 million.
Come on my brothers lets declare jihad on the Chinese woman judge Lau leh lan. She is not fit to be a judge. The Agung must fire her.
Let her feel the fire of Allah!

Recognised Denominations or Churches in Malaysia, please ensure and advise the authorities on the census scheduled for middle of this year, that during the exercise, the Catholic/Chrisitian religion is not abused or used by any quarters for the wrong reasons (the recent fake Xmas celebration here and elsewhere should be an indicator). Thanks

There are some politicians who do not have the correct facts at hand but as usual will burst out with allegations or distorted points that not only confused others but themselves. Christians in Malaysia have been using Bahasa Malaysia as one of the few mediums for worship, especially in Sabah and Sarawak for decades, yet this politician seem to be unaware and questioned 'why suddenly'. Of course the Christians have no hidden agenda or motive, but just wanted to worship and pray in peace and in all fairness to maintain the word 'Allah' as used past 400 years ago in then Malaya and now Malaysia, for their worship /Bible reading in Bahasa Malaysia.Of course Herald has a constitution right to ensure that they can use the word 'Allah' in their Bahasa Malaysia section for the benefit of the Bahasa Malaysia speaking Catholics. What racial and religious tension this politician is yelling about? I only can see that thousands of Malaysians including Muslims and Christians were present in Dataran Merdeka, KLCC, Bukit Bintang, etc to celebrate the New Year and no one is seen to cause any tension or conflict as a result of the Hight Court verdict that allows Herald to use the word 'Allah' again. I think only fanatics will end up burning properties and causing harm to others. No believer of the True God will do such a thing, as God is Love. By the way the numbers of Christians in Sabah is exceeding 1 million (not 2.45 million as the above report has stated). There are about 3.6 million to 4 million people in Sabah and about 1.4 million to 2 million are migrants workers(legal and illegal). As for Sarawak yes the figure is correct -numbers of Christians 43% or more of the population of Sarawak. The number of Catholics in Malaysia is estimated at exceeding 1 million and not 850,000 as reported by The MI.
