The public attends a forum entitled “Allah: Siapa yang punya?” yesterday.
JOHOR BARU: The Catholic Church in Malaysia says there is an urgent need to “defuse the conflict that fundamentalist groups are trying to ignite in the nation”.
At the opening of a Bishops’ Conference of Malaysia, Singapore and Brunei here, the church added it was “concerned and did not expect that the question of the use of the word ‘Allah,’ would be followed by a reaction of this kind, with attacks against churches and Christian buildings.”
The conference had already been scheduled for some time and was not held in reaction to the church attacks but the recent events meant a change to the agenda, according to Agenzia Fides, the Vatican-based news agency.
The bishops discussed the impact and countermeasures that need to be taken to defuse a situation described as “worrisome and delicate.”
Fides reports that “during the debate on the first day, the Bishops stressed that ‘meetings with civil authorities and dialogue with Muslim leaders are on-going and will continue in the coming days. We must act in harmony and seek the necessary co-operation of the government and the high religious authorities in order to restore a peaceful environment to Malaysian society’.”
Another concern was that “these episodes are ‘smearing’ the reputation of Malaysian Islam, known for its moderation and peaceful co-existence with other religions.” It was noted that “groups of moderate Muslims have taken turns guarding churches to avoid further acts of violence.”
Archbishop Salvatore Pennacchio, Apostolic Delegate to Malaysia, Singapore and Brunei, also stressed the need to work for dialogue.
The bishops also said that Christians “will work and will do everything possible to keep calm, not retaliate, and pray to avoid a dangerous escalation of the violence.”

Dear Catholic Bishops: Let us have an interfaith dialog here. You know for a fact that you are non-Arab Christians. Therefore, please withdraw your support for your fellows of non-Arab Christians and disallow them from using the kalimah 'Allah', especially for Malaysian Christians because, they may further confuse and insult or offend Muslims there by proselytizing to us, such as Allah Bapa, Isa anak lelaki tunggal Allah, kami adalah anak-anak Allah, marilah jadi anak-anak Allah and the likes, instead of Allah is the Creator, Allah does NOT beget nor is He begotten, Allah brings down rain, etc. In fact, unlike Muslims, non-Arab Christians are NOT required to say prayers in Arabic anyway, like using the word 'Allah'. Besides, historical facts do prove that the Old Testament and the New Testament were first discovered to have been written in Hebrew and Greek, respectively. Therefore, it is more preferable for Christians to use the terms ‘Elohim’ and ‘Dios’ (Correction: 'Dios' is Spanish, whereas 'Theos' is Greek) or at least a Malay word ‘Tuhan’ for God instead of Allah. Hopefully, basic common sense should prevail instead of the highly complicated legalistic sense made by the Malaysian High Court. Above all, please do NOT allow the Christians, Malaysian Christians in particular to become wolves wearing sheep's skin there in order to restore or maintain peace and harmony among us. Please let me know if you think anything further and new on this controversial issue.

The word Allah is for Muslims only. The word "Allah" is the most general name for Muslims. If you do not know who is Allah, better not try to use that word. All Christians do not know who is Allah. Is only Islam only people who know who is allah. I ask you whether I (Christians) really know who is Allah? If know, please reply me: onexora@gmail.com
