KUALA LUMPUR: Hotelier Joe Jeofry, like thousands of Christian East Malaysians who worship in Bahasa Malaysia, is dismayed over attempts to restrict their use of ‘Allah’ despite the recent High Court ruling allowing them to do so.
The Dec 31 High Court ruling reversed a Home Ministry ban on the use of Allah for Catholic newspaper Herald in its Bahasa Malaysia edition.
The hardliners in Umno and PAS have objected to the judgment and have urged the ministry to appeal.
“The restriction is oppressive.” said the father of four who pointed out that it goes against the grain of Datuk Seri Najib Razak’s 1 Malaysia.
The 45-year-old from Papar, Sabah, who attends Mass at St Anthony Church in Pudu, told The Malaysian Insider that he has been using Allah to mean Lord as long as he can remember while East Malaysians had been using the term for hundreds of years.
Jeofry said when he read law, he was taught about the supremacy of the constitution and the freedom of religion which is suppose to exist in Malaysia but lamented that in reality these were not followed here.
“We just want to be left alone to worship as we always have. We acknowledged that Islam is the main religion of the country and it’s not our intention to disrupt this.”
Sarawakian Rosa Lungan expressed the same concerns.
The 43-year-old kindergarten teacher said she was brought up reading the Bible in Bahasa which used Allah and there had never been any problems till now.
“God is greater than this situation and I am praying for this problem to be resolved.”
Also in St Anthony today was Don, a Christian Indonesian contract worker who aptly pointed out that the mix of politics and religion was the main cause behind the attempted ban of the use of Allah for Christians.
“Politicians should not get involved with religion.” he said adding that in Indonesia there was no problem with Christians using Allah.
They were among the some 700 East Malaysians, Indonesians, Filipinos and locals celebrating Sunday Mass as they usually do at noon in Bahasa Malaysia at St Anthony’s.
No reference was made to Thursday’s ruling.

By all means, please excuse me because I know that you all in Malaysia are non-Arabic Christians. Therefore, please disallow non-Arab Christians to use the kalimah 'Allah', especially for Malaysian Christians because they may further confuse and insult or offend Muslims there by proselytizing to us, such as Allah Bapa, Isa anak lelaki tunggal Allah, kami adalah anak-anak Allah, and the like instead of Allah is the Creator, Allah does NOT beget nor is He begotten, Allah brings down rain, etc. In fact, unlike Muslims, non-Arab Christians are NOT required to say prayers in Arabic anyway, like using the word 'Allah'. Besides, the Old Testament and the New Testament were first discovered to have been written in Hebrew and Greek, respectively. Therefore, it is more preferable for Christians to use the terms ‘Elohim’ and ‘Dios’ or at least a Malay word ‘Tuhan’ for God instead of Allah. Hopefully, basic common sense should prevail instead of the highly complicated legalistic sense made by the Malaysian High Court. Please let me know what you think.
Warm Regards,

ALLAH
Finally we got over with it. The Court ruling that the word Allah is not exclusively Islamic is most welcome.
Now is the time to settle our differences and abide by the will of the law. Perhaps it’s a disgrace to have even gone to the courts.
The courts have decided that Allah is the God of Christians too; a muslim viewpoint for 1444 years; only that the christians refused to accept it all along.
With a stroke of her pen the learned judge has changed the status of a funny god, a vicious god, the god of infidels, the god of a false prophet, the god of violence and lately the god of terrorism into the pure christian god, a white god, benevolent and lamb too; perhaps with the beard and the robes of Michaelangelo.
With the stroke of her pen, she has also meant that Allah is no more ONE and OMNIPOTENT. Allah can have gender, can be one, three, one in three, three in one, the father, the son or the devil and all. So the muslim quranic concept of One with neither father, son nor gender cannot stand forever in a Malaysian court of law.
Wallah! La tahzan, similar court rulings in Europe brought in millions of christians into the folds of Islam. The venerable editor of the Herald has just opened the floodgates. We shall welcome the thousands of malaysian christians into Islam.
Anyway the bible states Christ as having cried in pure arabic ‘ Ilahi! Ilahi! Lamaa sabaqtani!’ which translates to my Allah! My Allah!, why has thou forsaken me! NOT my god, my god, my father,my father, my tuhan my tuhan or my hantu my hantu.
And to the venerable reverend, when are you REVERTING Jesus back to ‘Esa, gospel back to Injeel, John back to Yahya, Peter back to Simon or Samiun, Emmanuel bzck to AL Iman and the host of other Latin nonsense back to their original semitic?
Perhaps, then we can hail 1Malaysia as one in every sense. I apologise if my comments has hurt anyone’s feelings, but that according to the learned judge freedom of speech is enshrined in the constitution and espoused by the courts.
As long as we have traitors among us who sell the religion in exchange for power, who do not even mind non muslims from quoting arabic quranic verses with wrong pronunciation and intonation, screw out fatwas for self interest, go around compromising everything and anything to secure power, we will loose out. The Muslim first and everything next has also died down. As for the Honourable Member of Parliament, the non-muslims dealing with the Prophet were speaking arabic not malay. In arabic it is Allah. In malay it is tuhan. Malay bibles; please take note.
La tahzan, just the word. By using just the word, are we and our children going to fall for Christianity. Even under the sword we did not yield. We will never yeild to rubbish and filth. A few perhaps, for the sugar and milk powder. Even they, their faith is for the sugar and milk powder, not for the cross.

I am dismayed why Christians want to use Allah (arabic) in Malay Bible instead of Tuhan. Then why not replace Allah in English bible instead of the word God.

I think no matter what language you address God in, God looks into your heart whether you trust in Him or not. In the bible Jesus has said in John 3:16 "For God so love the world that He gave His only son, and whoever belief in Him shall not parish but have eternal life". When Moses ask God's name in the burning bush, God replied Moses," I am who I am". God is the great I Am. I pray that they would not use "Allah" as there are so many names to address God in the Bible.
