Manila: "The priest must proclaim to the world and throughout his life that he belongs to God." With this invitation Card. Gaudencio Rosales, archbishop of Manila, closed on 29 January, the second national conference of Filipino priests. The meeting, entitled "Faithfulness of Christ, faithfulness of priests," was organized by the Filipino bishops' conference on the occasion of the Year for Priests and was held from January 25 at the World Trade Centre in Manila. Over 5 thousand of the 7 thousand priests resident in the country attended.
"Through this congress priests and bishops have renewed and invigorated their reasons for joining the priesthood - said Msgr. Jacinto Agacoili Jose, bishop of Urdaneta (Pangasinan) – gifting themselves to serve the Church faithfully and with renewed missionary zeal”.
The 6 day meeting was marked by prayer retreats, seminars and testimonies focused on the significance of the priestly mission and role of the priest in the modern society. It also saw the participation of Italians: Fr. Raniero Cantalamessa, preacher to the Papal Household in charge of organising retreats and Maria Voce, President of the Focolari Movement.
"The gift of the priesthood and mission are inseparable - said Msgr. Fiorentino Lavarias head of the commission for clergy of the Episcopal Conference of the Philippines - Priests are fragile and imperfect like all human beings and they need the grace of God and divine providence to live the mystery of their vocation and mission, they are aided in this by daily prayer” . According to the prelate, the priest's life is a journey that goes from self-realization to conversion of heart.
The first national conference of priests was organized in 2004. That event involved about 3 thousand priests and was centred on the theme: "A renewed clergy, a renewed Church, a renewed nation”. With over 5542 priests from 86 different dioceses, the 2010meeting was one of the key events for the Filipino Catholic Church, especially to redefine its missionary role as the only Catholic country in Asia along with East Timor.

I also think the 5,000 priests should also cry out to God that they belong to Him! Then the priests being renewed and transformed once again and be committed in their priesthood vocation must go and serve the people wholeheartedly that God has choosen for each priest to discharge their priestly duties by being a channel of God's love to all humans- poor, rich, educated or otherwise, male or female, irrespectively of ethnic and language background.Priests must be mirrors or reflection of the Risen Christ they represented and preached.Malaysian priests too must be renewed in their vocation especially in the Year for Priests.Catholics must pray earnestly for all priests that they remain faithful to Christ and His church and be becons of hope that people could be lead into the Kingdom of God. Priests must be willingly to suffer (sacrifice)for the sake of the gospel. Nowadays most priests in modern cities have comfortable homes to stay, good food-even a maid or cook, air-cond room, TV/Astro, HP, etc.Though many do not abuse such facilities, yet priests must always remember that out there there are many others who do not enjoy or have much comfort or facilities owned. The poor or even middle class Malaysians who could be jobless or low wage-earners who could afford only simple meals or even one or two simple meals per day.Yet they do not complain or show to others their pain simple lifest
yle. Priests must always adhere to a simple lifestyle, earnestly devoting time in prayer and scripture reading, celebrate regular Eucharist- to strengthen themselves. Providing counselling,Confession, visiting the sick in hospitals and meeting the hardcore poor in order to strengthen their vocation and faith. They should avoid spending too much time in rich and influence Catholic homes for exotic meals or wine. They should instead be spending more time with the weak, poor, marginalised, lonely and forgotten Catholics or lapsed Christians and those seeking or searchnig for God and for the truth. Priests must be seen to be fair to everyone and must not have favorites in their parishes as many are known to monopolised them and spending time with all- not just hooked up time with these few week after week. They must project a pure image in their conduct for the youths to emulate them. Priests must not forget that the faitful are praying for their wellbeing, yet the priests must continue to shoulder their responsibilities to ensure their flocks under their care are not mislead and go astray to other denomination or completely from the faith. They too are humans- making mistakes once in a while- yet the faithful must remain perservered in the faith and pray to God for them, wherever they may make the wrong decision.Priests must always invoke the Holy Spirit in their vocation, for guidance and protection against the Evil one.Priests must encourage the laity and be compassionate to others and not to abuse their position. They must have vocation talks to their young parishioners regularly, so that the interest in priesthood will always be on the mind of the young.Encourage each other and share with those who have not.
