Herald editor calls for calm amid ‘Allah’ uproar

KUALA LUMPUR: Father Lawrence Andrew (left), the priest who edits Catholic paper, Herald, today reassured Malaysians that the church was not on any campaign to convert Muslims after a High Court allowed it to use the word “Allah” to mean God in the Christian sense.

“There are allegations we’re trying to convert Muslims. We’re not doing that,” Lawrence told to The Malaysian Insider in a phone interview this afternoon.

“You cannot use the word ‘Allah’ anyhow. We have to use it accordingly,” he stressed and repeated his earlier explanation from Dec 31, just after the High Court ruled that the Catholic church had a constitutional right to publish the word “Allah” and overturned the home minister’s ban.

The priest sounded troubled over the recent uproar over the court ruling, which has pitted the majority Muslims against the minority Christians in the country, and drawing negative international publicity to Malaysia.

He was particularly upset that some groups had taken an extremist stand to wrongly portray the Catholic church as challenging the position of Islam in the country, further stoking the debate.

“We’re not gloating. We are definitely for peace, wisdom and understanding and respect for every individual, what more the Almighty.

“All of us are accountable to the Almighty in our lives,” he said.

“What can we say at this moment?” he asked, seemingly overwhelmed.

He appealed to the public to remain calm and composed amid the increasing roar from certain Muslim groups questioning the validity of the court judgment over the name of God.

Lawrence said he is aware of an online movement mooted by several influential Muslims petitioning the federal government to appeal but added that he had not read the comments.

“We remain calm. Let the decision of the court be respected and if people are unhappy with the decision, let them appeal,” he said, and added: “The Prime Minister has already mentioned it.”

Lawrence's appeal was backed by the Council of Churches Malaysia (CCM).

“The Prime Minister has said to follow the legal process dealing with this matter. And the court has made a decision. We should respect that judgment,” its secretary, Reverend Hermen Shastri told The Malaysian Insider just shortly before the home ministry filed a notice to appeal the High Court ruling at the Court of Appeal in Putrajaya today.

“We should look at it in the spirit of 1 Malaysia and promote peace and harmony in our society,” he added, urging his countrymen to follow the unity slogan mooted by PM Datuk Seri Najib Razak.

“For centuries, religions have been existing in peace and this has been observed all over Asia,” Shastri said and asked all groups not to “play up” the issue, which could potentially disrupt the fragile harmony in multi-religious Malaysia.
