OXFORD ( Commodity Online): Deputy Prime Minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin (picture) said he would not allow the issue of using the word “Allah” by non-Muslims in Malaysia to recur in the future.
He said (former prime minister) Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad mentioned that the legal process was not the best solution to a problem, and there could be other avenues.
“I agree to a certain extent. What is important is to handle the situation wisely,” he said when answering a question from the floor after delivering a lecture entitled “Islam and Critical Challenges in Multireligious Malaysia” at the Oxford Centre for Islamic Studies (OCFIS) here.
“Things (religious tension and church attacks) have of course happened but we hope they will not recur in the future,” he said.
Muhyiddin said he had been receiving quite a number of messages from non-Muslim friends in Sabah and Sarawak who said there were Christians who felt that things would not have happened in the first place “if we, the Christians, would just not use the word ‘Allah’”.
“This is because in Malaysia and in many parts of the world and in all Muslim countries, Allah is the only God for Muslims. We cannot equate Allah to god in the other religions and even in Christianity, which believes in the concept of the Trinity.
“There are differences, I don’t want to go deep into that issue. I think we have to manage issues at home our own way because we have our own way of life, culture, traditions and respect for one another which are our strengths.
“I think we can manage that, and InsyaAllah (God willing), those things that have happened will not recur,” he said.
OCFIS, which is about 100km from London, is a recognised independent centre of Oxford University.
It was established in 1985 to encourage the scholarly study of Islam and the Islamic world. The Prince of Wales is the patron of the centre.
Several great world leaders had spoken there, including former South African president Nelson Mandela, Dr Mahathir, former United Nations secretary-general Kofi Annan and Indian National Congress president Sonia Gandhi, as well as Prince Charles himself.
Earlier, in his lecture, Muhyiddin said that as a multi-religious country, Malaysia continued to face challenges in promoting religious tolerance and maintaining religious harmony.
“This is a constant and permanent challenge. Just as I speak here today, there is hue and cry among the Muslim community in Malaysia over a High Court ruling which allows a Christian publication to use the word ‘Allah’ in its newsletter.
“No matter what our personal view is on this issue, whether we think that it is the right of Christians to use the word “Allah” for the Christian God or it is the exclusive right of the Muslims to claim possession of the word, we have to acknowledge that such an incident causes discord in a multi-religious country.”
He said this was just one of the many examples of discord arising from disputes over the rights of religious communities.
“Furthermore, as the discourse on the right to freedom of religion gather strength, some disillusioned groups might raise competing demands in pursuit of group interests under the guise of religious freedom.
“Of late, there were court cases involving the issue of conversion, divorce, child custody and building of cemeteries and houses of worship that have led different religious groups to reinforce articulation of group interests,” he said.
The combined effect of these competing interests, if not properly managed, he said, was hatred and animosity among the religious communities.

Dear The Catholic Observer: Please state your factual answers (non-opinionated) answers to my factual questions here: (1)-Can you be more specific as to what language of Christians who were and are still reasonably justified in using 'Allah' in Trinity because it was and still is their native language for 'God' or 'Tuhan'? (2)-Do you speak Arabic to reasonably justify using 'Allah' in Trinity for your prayers and worship services in Malaysia? (3)-Are non-Arab Christians or more specifically Trinitarians like you required to invoke 'Allah' in Trinity for your prayers and worship services to be valid and acceptable when you already know for a well-known fact that 'God' and 'Lord' in Trinity as used in New York here as well as 'Tuhan' and 'Dewata' in Malay are already valid and acceptable in your prayers and worship services? (4)-Was 'God' or 'Allah' written as 'Elohim' and 'Theos' in the two ancient manusc
ripts of the Old Testament and the New Testament as first discovered by sc riptural scholars and archeological researchers, respectively? (5)-You the Catholic Observer already knows as an undeniable fact that you still have your constitutional rights for freedom of worship without invoking the kalimah 'Allah' in Trinity, right? Mengapa masih mengada-gada lagi? Sportinglah sikit dan janganlah sampai mengada-gada lagi OK.

Come on The Catholic Observer. Who do you think you are kidding? You the Catholic Observer must admit of seeing pictures and statues of Mary with her baby Jesus in Catholic churches anywhere, even in New York here. The Trinitarians ironically accept the Trinity to represent one God which they explain as if they are confused themselves like gibberish. Even you the Catholic Observer is unable to explain the Trinity without being NOT only confusing but also gibberish. That is, the Trinitarians do NOT correctly understand the qualities and attributes of one God. So, be frank and admit that the Trinity represents 3 Gods as 3 Persons getting together as one group NOT as one God or one Person. See! Honesty is the best policy here, especially in stating what Trinity really is like. What is Trinity if you the Catholic Observer are NOT confused to understand it yourself? Indeed, You the Catholic Observer must NOT hide the facts about Trinity as referring to 3 persons as proven in quotations as follows: "Bible Dictionary Trinity a word not found in sc
ripture, but used to express the doctrine of the unity of God as subsisting in three distinct Persons. This word is derived from the Gr. trias, first used by Theophilus (A.D. 168-183), or from the Lat. trinitas, first used by Tertullian (A.D. 220), to express this doctrine. The propositions involved in the doctrine are these: 1. That God is one, and that there is but one God (Deut. 6:4; 1 Kings 8:60; Isa. 44:6; Mark 12:29, 32; John 10:30). 2. That the Father is a distinct divine Person (hypostasis, subsistentia, persona, suppositum intellectuale), distinct from the Son and the Holy Spirit. 3. That Jesus Christ was truly God, and yet was a Person distinct from the Father and the Holy Spirit. 4. That the Holy Spirit is also a distinct divine Person. Easton's 1897 Bible Dictionary Cite This Source" The 'Word of Allah'; that is 'Be' is definitely NOT exclusive to Jesus only, because anything that exists is created by Allah as in Surah 3:47 "When He has decreed something, He says to it only 'Be' and 'it is'." Jesus as 'Ruhullah' means as 'Spirit created by Allah and belonging to Allah as well' NOT as Spirit part of Allah. In fact, we are also spirits created by Allah and belonging to Him. Therefore, nothing in the Quran which is also known as the Word of Allah implies that Jesus is divine or the Son of God. Besides, there is no plurality in unity for Trinity that the Quran allows. In fact, the Quran disallows Allah in Trinity for you to find and quote it here if you are really a good reader. UNLIKE in the Bible, like the Trinity as defined and quoted from the Bible Dictionary here previously. See! It is now clear that the Trinity represents 3 distinct (different) persons as 3 Gods and NOT one person as one God. Use your basic mathematical skill in calculating 1+1+1=3 NOT 1. On the other hand, 1x1x1=1 cannot be used for the Trinity, because clearly the 3 persons are NOT like 3 identical triplets having the same, exact fingeprints. So, the key point here is for you the Catholic Observer to keep up with your constitutional rights for freedom of worship without invoking 'Allah', since you already know for a fact that your church prayers and worship services are still valid and acceptable without using the kalimah 'Allah' at all, just like using the terms 'God' and 'Lord' in New York here for church prayers and worship services are still valid and acceptable without invoking 'Allah' at all, meaning that you the Catholic Observer as non-Arabic speaking Trinitarians can more conveniently use 'Tuhan Bapa' and 'Dewata Yesus Kristus' or preferably 'Elohim Bapa' and 'Theos Yesus Kristus' as out of respect for your Old Testament and New Testament which were first discovered by scriptural scholars and archeological researchers to have been written in Hebrew and Greek, respectively. Furthermore, Trinitarians are UNLIKE Muslims who must invoke 'Allah' for prayers to be valid and acceptable. So, tiada perlu nak mengada-gada lagi hingga ke court. Sportinglah sikit dan janganlah sampai mengada-gada hendak gunakan kalimah 'Allah' yang you tidak perlukan sama-sekali in Trinity.

To Mohammad Saidin, ,your understand of God and the concept of the Holy Trinity is very shallow and wrong. What you mean Allah Bapa to imply needing Allah Ibu? First and foremost God is One and it is Holy Trinity in One God. Mother Mary (Mariam) is not a god but a human who gave birth to Jesus Christ, the Saviour of the world. Jesus born into the world- the Word of God, made Flesh and dwell among us. He came from God and is called the Son by the Father as our religion is ba
sed on relationship and as God is Love.Jesus said My father and I are One. You see Me, you have seen the Father. There is no such thing as three Gods. You muslims have been confused by your ulamas.Of course the Ten Commandments we do follow. As there is only One Lord God (Tuhan Allah) Christians believed in. We are all children of God and Mary is also called as Mother of God as an honour for giving birth to Jesus, Son of God, the Messiah. She is not worshipped nor is part of the Trinity, as you have seem to have believed.Confusion and misunderstanding is what you have. So no point to talk to you more unless you go read the Holy Bible in all entirety and you will know the truth and the truth will set you free from all falsehoods and deceptions.May the Holy Spirit enlighten you to seek the truth in Christ Jesus, our Lord and God.

Dear Give In...you seem to be confused or are put in fear..The Lord God said fear not for I'm with you till the end of the world. So where is your faith??? Shranked after the fire bombs? Or your faith was not growing since the last 10 years? The Herald will not give in to bullies. They have a constituitonal right to use Allah (an Arabic word that is also now an Indonesian and Malay word to denote as God)in their Bahasa Malaysia worship and in BM section of Herald. it is not a word belongs to a particular country or race or religion. No ones can copyright a word. Further it is not herald that you seem to believe in to instigate voilence. Christians do not promote any form of violence. The Church promotes justice, fairness and peace. When the issue was brought up, it appears the government do not want to have a dialogue. The when the govt banned the word in Herald, they have no other alternative but to bring the matter to the court of law for a review of their rights in using the word Allah in Bahasa Malaysia. Only the few numbers are involved in arson attacks. Even PAS, PKR and many muslims support the use of the word Allah. So please read more to understand the issue not jumping the gun to fire at Herald.Shalom,

With the narrow mindedness of our leaders, how can 1Malaysia ever be successful. There is only one God, there is no Muslim or Christian God. It's embarrassing that this has happened and the leaders are responsible for supporting the protest to happen

Just stop using the word and swallow your Christianity ego for the sake of peace and harmony. We are minority anyway, so live within the boundaries. This are facts of life. And the very least, your children will get to live here longer and not in a war torn country like Africa.
Use your brain, not emotion. The Herald should just drop the word and move on with live for all of us that want peace and harmony. Else you will be instigating our country's peace.

Dear Fair Comment:
The kalimah 'Allah' was never used in the Old Testament and the New Testament which were originally discovered and found by sc
riptural scholars and archeological researchers to have been written in Hebrew and Greek, respectively. Only when these two scriptures were later translated into other languages, including Arabic, then only Arab Christians, who did and still now do NOT speak neither Hebrew nor Greek, used and still use the kalimah 'Allah'. In fact, unlike Muslims who have to say prayers in Arabic, non-Arab Christians like those Malaysian Christians in particular know for a fact that they are NOT required to say prayers in Arabic like using the word 'Allah' in particular. It is therefore more preferable for those non-Arab Christians to use 'Elohim' and 'Theos' to denote God or Tuhan, since both of their scriptures as mentioned previously were originally written in Hebrew and Greek, respectively. If non-Arab Malaysian Christians insist on using 'Allah', then they may say 'Allah Bapa' implying needing 'Allah Ibu', where the Trinity requires Allah to have partners or associates, and they are thus in violation of "The Lord our God is one Lord" (Mark 12:29). Moreover, (they) the Malaysian Christians in particular may subsequently confuse to insult or offend their Muslim neighbors by causing animosity. Therefore, those Malaysian Christians are apparently in violation of the first two commandments, which are of the utmost importance in the ten commandments. See how flexible and tolerant the Malaysian Muslims have been in allowing those Malaysian Christians to use the word 'Tuhan' instead of 'Elohim' and 'Theos' to denote 'Allah'. Next time, please rely more on basic common sense instead of on the highly complicated legalistic sense made by the Malaysian High Court. Above all, those Malaysian Christians need to prove compliance with the first two out of the ten commandments: Worship one God only (without partners or associates) and Love thy neighbors as thou love thyself. Amen.

Without prejudice, is the DPM higher than the courts? You said you will not allow the issue of using the word Allah by non-Muslims to recur in future? The High Court has already given the verdict. Why can't fellow Malaysians just accept the court decision which is independent and fair? If the Muslims have just done so--like Muslims from PKR, PAS and many others- silent majority, then why must some Muslims in a particular party/society cannot accept the verdict by the court of law? Even you need to appeal- you can do so,but why must go and protest and incite others (a handful like the arson attackers)to hate Christians. Even a local newspaper has been playing this issue to gain support and to incite fear. Why must this particular religion which has been pampered for decades continue be pampered, otherwise if not in its favour will retaliate if cannot get what it wants? The question is ..Is the statement by the politician is done to influence the Court of Appeal? Is putting pressure and causing arson attacks by a small group of fanatics means we have to back step to Dr M era, where a section of citizens had to give in or give up- just on anything, just to pleased a particular religion or race, so that there will be peace and harmony in the country? Is this called freedom of religion or fairness? The problem was caused by the Home Ministry by banning Herald in the first place should they used the word Allah in their BM section to denote as God. The matter could have been resolved by a round table in the past with the leaders of both faiths sitting and understanding each other and finding a just solution so that the public will not be distracted or wrongly informed. But there was no dialogue been called to strike an understanding. The Christians in Sabah & Sarawak have used Allah long before joining Malaya to form Malaysia. They had used Allah in their worship 300 years ago. It appears the DPM do not seem to understand this position but claimed several Christians from East Malaysia had told him that the problems whouldn't had happened if Christians didnt use Allah. Are they representing the majority of Christians speaking or just 5 or 6 of them?? Have you taken into consideration the majority of Christians' rights? The attacks on churches are just a way to threaten the Christians to give up , to surrender the word Allah and to withdraw from the court. Those acts of arson is not only damaging the country's foreign investments but also tourism. It also shows to the world that there appears to be lack of religious freedom or freedom of worshipping in one's own way or words.Shouldn't action be taken against the attackers instead ?Justice must be seen here and be done, but alas it appears the DPM is more interested to protect a particular religion. What do you know about the concept of Trinity? Didn't the Christians worshipped One God? Didnt the word Allah was used by Arabic Jews and Christians long before Islam came into being? What cases taken to court lately is because there appears to be no alternatives or avenues for such issues to be resolved amicabally. The word Allah is not a copyright word nor exclusive used by any particular race or religion. Let's not fool ourselves about this, just to high up the ante for more votes. The problem could have been resolved in private before.. if the government at that time was sincere. While noting that Christians in Sabah & Sarawak have been worshipping in Bahasa Malaysia and using Allah to denote God, the govenment should have just allow it in private but with some conditions like to restrict it to be used in churches and Christians homes only.Afterall the Herald is sold in churches only- not in public.I think by forcing the Christians to back peddled is not wise, afterall the issue has already blowed out of the country for everyone to see and know. The best solution now is to adhered to the court's decision and abide by it.And the same time to issue a stern warning to anyone trying to damage or cause arson to any house of worship. Then I think the issue can be resloved amicabally.
