PUTRAJAYA: Islamic academics and administrators have blamed Christians for provoking Muslim anger by challenging the ban on their use of the word “Allah”.
Politicians, particularly those from Umno/Barisan Nasional (BN) were also blamed for failing to defend Islam against perceived threats.
Panellists at a forum organised for civil servants here by the Islamic Development Department (Jakim) suggested that the Barisan Nasional (BN) government was lax in defending Islam, after the High Court ruling allowing a Catholic weekly to use “Allah” in its Bahasa Malaysia section.
Zamihan Mat Zin from the Institut Latihan Islam Malaysia blasted politicians for being vocal only on Malay rights but doing little for Islam.
“Some politicians are ever so vocal when it comes to defending Malay rights but when it comes to their religion, they are quiet. What is the use of defending Malay rights if our religion is not protected?” he told about 800 civil servants at a special forum here today.
Zamihan said deliberate attempts were being made to degrade Islam, citing as an example the Catholic Church’s legal challenge against the ban imposed on the Herald weekly for using “Allah” to describe the Christian God.
“Extremism can be found in any religion and this challenge is definitely one of them,” he said and stressed that references in Islam that “Allah” was exclusive to the Muslims are pervasive.
Mohd Aizam Masod, an officer from Jakim’s research department, said the argument that Arab Christians and Jews also used the word “Allah” had no domestic merits given that Malaysia is not an Arabic speaking nation.
“For Christians, this is just a question of translation but for us Muslims, the term Allah is integral to our akidah (faith),” he said, arguing that the usage of “Allah” by non-Muslims can and does confuse Muslims.
“Imagine if Jesus Christ, which under the Unitarian concept is considered as God to the Christians, be called ‘Allah’, wouldn’t it be confusing? Allah is by definition a description of a singular Muslim God, but non-Muslims usage will pluralise it,” he said.
Deputy chief of Syariah Research Department of the Attorney-General’s office, Mahamad Nasir Disa, who spoke on the issue from a legal perspective, agreed with his fellow panellists that the issue was an act of provocation by Christians.
“Often the argument given by them is that to deny the usage is to deny their rights to practise their religion but our argument is that the word ‘Allah’ is not an integral part of their religion as compared to us.
“If that is the case, then we can talk about rights. If not, don’t talk about rights,” he said.
Mahamad, too, agreed that there is “a lack of real leadership” in dealing with the matter, saying that the government had the power to prevent non-Muslims from using “Allah”.
He said that preventing non-Muslims from using the word “Allah” would ease ethnic tensions.
Yesterday, four boar heads were found at two mosques, the latest in a series of attacks and acts of vandalism on places of worship, including arson attempts on churches, following the “Allah” ruling.
In his remarks, Mohd Aizam also used alleged “historical facts” to say that Christians had tried to convert Muslims in the region since the colonial days by translating their bibles into local languages.
But Zamihan went as far as suggesting that a repeat of the May 13 racial riots was possible if the Christians, which to him practised extremism in the matter, did not back down.
“Who knows, there might be a Feb 13?” said Zamihan.

Are you implying that you 'Fair Comment' have more expertise in the Bible than the Revised Standard Version Bible which has been unanimously decided by 32 Bible scholars of the highest eminence backed by 50 cooperating denominations? See that (I John 5:7) is removed recently after John has been used for many centuries in the King James Version Bible and in other Bibles. Wake up! Jesus' saying that "I and my Father are one," implies that Jesus is the Father of himself as well as the Son of himself!!!??? Besides, Jesus excludes the 3rd. divine Person or the Holy Spirit from being one with him and his Father, resulting in more confusion in the Trinity; that is, with the absence of the Holy Spirit in (John 10:30). So, how do you expect the Holy Spirit to properly guide Jesus who decided to exclude the Holy Spirit in (John 10:30)?

To Religious Rights-I know you are the same Mohammad Saidin. You better go read New King James Version (1 John 5:7).Furthermore go goggle and read...the history is very long and with lengthy explanations. This passage text is not expunged, those some may omit it as with reasons.Even without this passage about The Father, The Word and The Holy Spirit ..and all these three are One...there are many other versus in the Bible..Jesus said My Father and I are One. (Gospel).,etc.There is no fabricatinos okay. But other people from other religion have been twisting Biblcal facts here and there for their own ends. There is no confusion in explanating about the concept of Trinity. It is those muslims who do not really want to understand as they appeared unable to grapsed the mystery of the Trinity. Perhaps you need the guidance of the Holy Spirit to enlighten you with wisdom and understanding before you can even understand and not getting confused easily. Man of little faith....

I see here there is another Catholic Observer.Praise God. (Shukur pada Allah). Well this Jakim should ask themselves how do Christians feel..when muslims claimed Jesus as Prophet only and didn't die on the cross..apparently someone else took Jesus place and was cruxified. In the Holy Bible it was clearly stated that Jesus Christ died for our sins on the cross, He suffered, was cruxified, died and on the third day rose from the death.Jesus was the Messiah. This believe for Christians is faith (Akidah).Do you see Christians confused or their faith shaken? For Muslims, Jesus (or they call Him Nabi Isa) is only human person and a prophet- nothing more. Isn't it an insult to Christians, when Jesus said that in the past God sent prophets to guide humans and in the end of times- God sent His Son (Jesus). Jesus said after Me, there is no one else. So isn't it this statement by the Messiah is very clear for all? No more prophet after Me....Yet for Christians-Jesus is the Saviour of the world- He is from God, the Son of God- the Word of God made Flesh and dwell among us.Jesus said My Father and I are One. The problem with these muslims at Jakim are they do not really fully understood the concept of the Trinity (wrongly understood) and the God that we believe in who created the universal and all things! There is only One Creator, One Lord, One God of all. Human minds are not God's mind. God thinking is different than us.God has more intellectual that us mere humans. God has the power to come in different forms when He came as Jesus the Saviour and as the Advocate (Holy Spirit)to enpowered His people and to guide and to lead and to strengthen us the Believers in God. God is everywhere, see all, knows all ... isn't this a miracle! Yet He is One Lord God Almighty. The Christians have been using the word Allah for centuries-yet the muslims do not seem to be confused back then and how many did convert as claimed by Mohd Aizam? You do not have the figures and facts, yet you make perceptions...just to drummed up support from the civil servants? Why is the government allowing such forum to take place when they are asking everyone to remain calm? Let the court decide..no need to allow some irresponsible small section of the population from inciting others, when the High Court has already made the verdict and the Court of Appeal is yet to set a date. What May 13? This is year 2010, not 1969..majority of Malaysians of all faiths and races are mature and knows what is fake and lies and knows the value of maintainig peace and harmony in the country. They want justice and fairness. Don't blame the Christians- blame the unfair and biased system.

Do you have constitutional rights to use 'Tuhan', 'Dewata', 'Elohim', and 'Theos' without invoking 'Allah' in Trinity?
Pertaining to the Trinity, why don't you accept the fact that I John 5:7 "the Father, the Word (Jesus), and the Holy Ghost (Spirit): and these three are one," has been expunged in the Revised Standard Version and in many other Bibles already as a fabrication in the Greek text?
Trinitarians are also confused in explaining the Trinity.
