Dear Editor,
I refer to HERALD June 16, 2019 in the Trending news article (Page 3) on the revised translation of the Our Father prayer.

On Dec 8, 2017, Pope Francis said that the words, “Lead us not into temptation” are wrong because God is not the cause of our downfall; in fact He is our Rescuer from falls!

I agree with Pope Francis.

In the very first temptation as recorded in Genesis 3 :1-7, it was Satan in the form of a snake who tempted Eve. She fell for it, leading to her downfall and she dragged down Adam too. In fact, God was so furious that He cursed the snake to crawl on its belly.

In the Gospel of Matthew 26:41, and also in the Gospel of Luke 22:40, Jesus exhorts his disciples, “Watch and pray that you do not fall into temptation.” It does not make sense to me that Jesus is referring to God as the tempter.

Finally, in James 1:13-14, it is recorded that one must not say one was tempted by God; God cannot be tempted and He tempts no one. Continuing in verse 15, “one’s evil desire conceives and give birth to sin.”

In my view, “Lead us not into temptation” ought to be reworded “Guard and protect us from the temptations of the evil one” .... and deliver us from all evil.”
